There's no reason to get a dual core CPU. There are a few quad core Pentiums out there, but I doubt that's what you're referring to as they're rather obscure. Being on a budget is totally understandable, but you'll still get much better performance for less money if you buy a pre-built with a third generation i5.

Currently using a Pentium g4560 with an EVGA GTX 1050 on a 1080p display myself. Does great in esports games. I don't have that many AAA titles, but I do have the 2013 Tomb Raider game and I believe it was on normal settings, it has a consistent 60fps, but you could up the settings at the cost of lower fps. Can't really say much for the latest and greatest titles though.

Get something that's at least a quad core.

Depends on what Pentium, really. Excluding the G3258, the 2C/2T parts would be pretty iffy, however the 2C/4T parts should do just fine for what you seem to want.

light games will be fine, a 8100 is just 60dollars more and has 4 cores though, if you are really on a budget then i'd go with a ryzen 2400g and 8gb ram instead

First of all the G4560 has hyper-threaded and secondly hyper-threading is not a substitute for actual physical cores so no it doesn't perform as well as a quad core.

Why would you use such a CPU and not for example get a used Ryzen 1000 or an Athlon 200GE??

 

The Rumormill claims that AMD might announce something at CES - wich is the week from 8th of January to the 12th...

So I'd wait at least until then and also look at other options as well.

Actually there's no actual quadcore desktop Pentium they all top at 2c/4t, but we do have the new entire Coffee Lake i3 line up as quad-cores so yeah an i3 8100 at this point being pretty much a rebranded i5 7400 makes more sense.

 

Or wait long enough for Ryzen 2 and grab the entry stuff of that line up as pointed out above... either ways this thread was from the beginning of the month and got resurrected by someone who's clueless about what is saying so yah...

I thought either the Gold or Silver ones were supposed to be quad core desktop CPU's. I know there are some mobile quad core Pentiums.

 

Either way, I wanted to make a point that you shouldn't buy a new dual core CPU for gaming, and that includes the Athlon CPU's.
