Slap some DDR3 ECC reg memory in there and go to town :P 

 

In all fairness, it depends on what kind of mods you run. I run a vanilla server for 5 people and that works great in a small Linux VM on my Microserver G10 with 2 cores assigned.

When the redesign was first launched I'd have had you beheaded, but now I know the logic it's pretty good. Tell your backend guys to up the download speeds, though :P

Yes, but it's not the best server for that because single core performance is pretty bad on those old Opterons.

 

I used to host a Minecraft server on a PowerEdge 2950 with 2x Xeon E5420 and 32gb of ram. It was able to run 50 players on a server with about 50 plugins without any problems, though that was back in 2013.

 

Best Opteron for that server has a bit slower single core performance than the E5420 but it has 2 more cores. What CPUs the one on ebay have?

Those old Opterons are rubbish. 

We have no idea what you get with it and at what price...

 

Opterons were only popular in that time due to core count and quad socket boards allowing for a lot of parallelisation and VM's to be on a single host. For game servers, Intel Xeons absolutely dominate AMD Opterons of that era. While MC servers like CraftBukkit & Spigot are multithreaded, they still perform better on less cores with higher frequencies (IPC) of the Xeons. 

 

Ideally you'd want a system that you arent paying for disks for either, so you could just use SSD's in it rather than 8-10 year old SAS drives. 

A decent Minecraft server with its chunk generation, mapping and regular backups absolutely loves its Disk I/O.
