Why is 144Hz a standard?

Well the title is pretty self explanatory.

Why is 144Hz so popular, i get that its smoother but who ever said "lez do 144Hz" why not 150 for example ?

It's a multiple if 24. It was as high as was reasonable.

144 is both an integer multiple of 24 and 48, the common framerates of movie/tv shows, and a few years ago was the maximum that DVI could handle. Display port offers a ton more options and as technology got better so theres 165, 180, 200 etc

Makes a lot of sense. But where does the 59-60Hz come from then ?

Just TV/movie things, 30 fps was also a standard, and 60 fps was another more smooth one. Theres tons of standards
