Games Crashing on RTX 2080

Nirofix
Go to solution Solved by Nirofix,

Thanks to all People that helped me. I think Its now clear that the GPU was  drawing too much Power

Hey Guys,

a week ago I got a 2080 strix and installed it.

This weekend I went to a LAN Party with friends.

When I played Rainbow Six Siege, the game freezes after a 2-3 Minutes.

Sometimes the whole PC freezes than Crashes

The same thing happens when I want to join a COD BO4 Game it freezes at the Character choosing

GTA V also crashed, then I used Direct X 10 and played in Borderless and it worked.

But if I play Rocket League everything is okay.

I tried different Drivers, the GPU is not Overheating, it has temperatures of 65 degrees when the Game crashes.

I even tried to install Windows 2-3 Times.

I search different Forums but didn't find a solution.

Somebody said I should watch in C:\Windows\Minidump for a file, there is a file I will attach it.

I think I don't have a Problem with my Power supply

My System:

Asus Rog Strix B350-F Gaming

8GB Crucial Ballistix Sports LT  DDR4-2400 DIMM CL16 Single

AMD Ryzen 5 1600

GeForce RTX 2080 ROG STRIX O8G Gaming

Samsung 970 Evo M.2

There are currently Some Problems with the RTX2080Ti but i don't know if this also applies to the RTX2080.

If it is only that specific game?

What you can do is look in the Eventviewer to see if it has Critical errors in the System tab.

maybe you can find something that crashes there.

EVGA does say on their website 550Watt minimum to 600Watt for the RTX 2080 and Minimum of a 650 Watt for the 2080 Ti

Requirements

  • Minimum of a 650 Watt power supply.
  • Two available 8-pin or 6+2pin PCI-E power dongles
  • Total Power Draw : 250 Watts ( 215 Watts for the RTX 2080)

I didn't overclocked my CPU manually, I only used the auto overclock of AI Suite III a few months ago.

I downclocked the GPU to see if it helps but it didn't.

The card manufacturers do Say 650 Minimal so with just error messages hunting i don't hink this can be solved.

You can try to downclock the card to see if it works for longer when you set everything down to low.

Keep in mind that 20%~ of the psu power disappears in heat etc. So ur 500w powersupply can only deliver up to 415-420 watts realistically. I bet your PSU is just too weak. :)

You can filter on Critical events. and look if any pop up with the timestamp that the computer had a shutdown.

Also i had contact with BeQuiet and they will update their calculator, though i cannot say how long that will take...

I've done the same mistake myself. 4 years I built a small HTPC to my dad, and I was using a calculator and I trusted it. I ended up having to buy a bigger PSU later on, as it crashed after a while.

When it's not under load.

when the GPU is under full load it can take up to 405 Watts on it's own.

That leaves almost no room for the other parts as AMD's Ryzen 5 1600 146 Watts

551 Watts of power for just those 2 components

Then the Ram, hdd/SSD, Cooling Fans, Disk Drives or Lighting will all require power as well..

:S

Usually the margin Max load + 20% so a 750 Watt will be sufficient.

700Watts at least

650w minimum. It wouldnt hurt buying a proper 850w either, as it will last long. I've bought a  HX1000i psu 4 years ago, and its just as relevant today as it was back then.

On the left side you can select Windows > system there you should look only for Critical errors.

normal errors could be that you have unplugged a USB stick or something minor like that.
