The pc building scene looks kinda goofy and I'd like a second opinion on some things.

Hey! I was planning to upgrade my rig entirely this Christmas, but it seems like such a weird time to build.

• RTX Launched, with no huge improvement over the last gen GTX making NVidia not an attractive choice for me.
• Planned on going with AMD for my processor, but word has it on January 8 they're launching a whole new line of processors, supposedly doubling core-counts on the high end(?).
• Love to pick an AMD GPU to go in my system but Vega still seems unimpressive and rumors have it we won't be seeing high-end Navi cards until 2020(?)
• Intel e x p e n s i v e 
• Intel's recent slip-up with the comparison between their chip and AMD's leaves a sour taste in my mouth, too

It just doesn't seem like a great time to build. I wanted around a Ryzen 7 2700x paired with a RTX 2070 / Vega 64, but as mentioned above theirs obvious problems with this.

I want this build to have a comfortable VR and a comfortable 1080p 144hz experience with the addition of some decent productivity performance. But I also don't want to deny myself of future performance and higher resolutions if it can be had shortly after I get parts for the same price. Thoughts?

Just because RTX seems underwhelming doesn't mean Nvidia isn't a valid option. If you are looking at a high-end GPU's I suggest getting a 1080Ti used, you can get some killer deals and it's nearly the same as an RTX 2080. Don't even bother with Vega. Also, the doubling of cores is on the Threadripper I haven't heard anything about doubling up on cores for the launch of the next line of whatever replaces the current Ryzen 7 CPU's. I would actually recommend getting a R7 1700 on the cheap. Then when AMD launches their 7nm CPU's swap for a new one. AMD has promised AM4 support through to 2020 so your motherboard would still be compatible.

there was an October pricing review done with FPS per dollar comparison I saw today. In a nutshell: rx570 is a steal for 1080p, 1070ti and Vega 56 for 1440p are the best value (v64 if you get a killer sale). I think it really depends on the price and if you have free sync or gsync display.

 

on the cpu front, a b450 mobo and a ryzen 1700x or 2700x are going for crazy sale prices right now, plus can upgrade to ryzen 2 on the same mobo.

 

my 1700 oc’d to 3.9ghz and v64 slays games at 1440p ultra 75hz no problem.

there is always going to be something coming out 'soon' or something to wait for, its computer parts, they come out with new stuff all the time. I would just focus on building a great PC based on what is out at the time that you are building it and not worry too much about the next gen stuff. A good PC is still going to be a good PC 5+ years later, after 5 more generations of intel processors come out and another series of graphics cards every 2-3 years, it just wont be the latest and greatest cutting edge stuff. 

 

Not trying to sound like a dick, but building computers really isn't all that expensive compared to many other hobbies. So if you were to upgrade again in a few years it might not be the end of the world if being cutting edge is important to you.

Vega is really competitive. Sure, similar performance and way too late, but it's good value. Available for the same price as the 1070 right now.
