Delidding Horror Storys, Successes and Tips

I've just order a der8auer tool to delid my i7 8700k and i'm just looking for some courage to void my $600 cpu's warranty or reason why I shouldn't.

Any tips, do's and don'ts from some experienced delidders would be awesome thanks

That CPU is not worth $600 btw. With the tool nothing should go wrong. Just follow the directions

Intel used toothpaste so a better cooler can only help so much

just be careful with the liquid metal use something to cover the pcb to stop it from shorting if it leaks over the edge

Follow the instructions for delidding. If you're using liquid metal, temporarily cover the pcb with tape just in case you have any excess. Also some nail polish on the pcb won't help after you're done applying the LM

Most common thing to do is use clear noil polish around the die covering the caps and such.

I have an alternate suggestion. You could alternatively return it and pickup the new 8 core intel 9900x for slightly more. It comes with 2 more cores, a higher base clock, and it has the chip soldered on so you don't need to ever worry about delidding it.

problem is I made the jump from i5 7600k to i7 8700k so no way am I giving intel anymore money those super greedy fucks.

I feel you on that, when I dailied my G3258 at 4.6/1.32v I'd hit 85C as well on my H115i. If money was a thing for me I totally would have delidded the little shit. :P

I would say dont use liquid metal. for a first time delider, why use something that riskya nd that needs to be replaced often? just get a high quality paste and be done with it.

Has little do with tax - is just the exchange rate, smaller market (so lower volume purchases) and difficult logistics outside of capital cities.

When all adjusted for, brand new at full retail an intel 8700K costs just $35USD more in Australia than it does in the US. I would expect a lot of that difference to be eaten up with tariffs on Chinese goods 

 

Though hey, we can just buy an 8700K from Newegg at the same price as the US. Shipped for free from the US and we don’t pay import tax on it - is a pretty good time to be Australian really.
