WesleydeGroot

Just a Quick question im looking to upgrade my pc. already upgraded it from a Gtx 970 to an Gtx 1080ti. Now the only thing left to do is upgrade my I5 4690k. so here is where you guys come in which one should I get?

Are you seeing performance related issues as a result of your 4690k?

If you're not, anything you're currently able to "upgrade" to is going to be incremental at best. the 4690k is still a very capable processor.

If you don't want to upgrade your motherboard, i7 4790/4790k.

If you don't mind upgrading your RAM and motherboard, you could either go with something like a 8th gen i5 or a Ryzen 5/7.

Depends how much you want to spend.

If you're on a budget you can find a used 4790K for pretty cheap.

He bought a 1080ti, so I think there is a good budget (probably). I would go high-end if you've already purchased a 1080ti. So I would take a 8th gen i5 or i7.

The best option right now, due to increased prices, is a Ryzen 2700x.

Upgrading to a 4770k or 4790k is too expensive as the used price is usually pretty high wich only leaves a complete upgrade to Ryzen 7.

For 500€ you can get something like a Ryzen 2700 with a decent B450 or X470 Board and a bit of DDR-2933 RAM.

Getting 2933/3000MHz RAM then overclocking to 3200MHz wouldn't be a bad idea though

Why not switch out the Dark Rock Pro 4 + 1700 for a 1800X or 2700X? The stock coolers on AMD are super good lol

Exactly!

Though the 1800X doesn't come with a Stock Heatsink, so that only leaves the 2700X.

its not the best but it should be usable.
But then again, he needs either a different Board (with 400 Series Chipset) or someone to flash the BIOS because UEFI doesn't work with unrecognized CPUs (for whatever reason)...

Something like a B450 should work. I don't think he really needs X370's features

No they are not...

Also, the increase in cost doesn't justify the increase in performance here.

Just imagine how toasty the vrms would be on ur b450 board when he'll be overclocking the 1800x u r suggesting to him

True. He could keep the X370 board and get the 1800X + some 50€ cooler since it's only 20€ more.

Compared to the Intel, they are awesome.

But the plan isn't to use the Stock Heatsink forever but only for a month or two, until the money for a good heatsink is there.

Thing is that OC on an 1800x makes little to no sense as we are talking about like 100-200MHz more on all cores - but loose the higher Single/Dual Core Turbo, so it can be better to leave it as it is...

So with Ryzen I'd not bother about OC as it is just too much effort for too little gain - if at all...

Wel, yeah, the 1700 is 210€, the 1700X is like 5 bucks more, so the 1700 is only worth it if you care about idle Power Consumption because it idles at lower clocks than the X one.

The 1700 should idle at around 1600MHz, while the 1700X (and probably also the 1800X) idles at 2200MHz for whatever reason.

The 1800X is at around 230€ or so...

And then comes the huge jump from the 1800X to the 2700 - wich is like 45€...

Here a Clock Rate vs. Thread Count comperisation:

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_2700/16.html

Its like 200-300MHz more on the 1800X vs the 2700 - not that worth it - so you pay here for the slight optimizations and better memory compatibility...

however, the 2700X is around 500MHz more than the 1800X....

Wait for the Coffee Lake Refresh reviews that we should see later this week. It would not surprise me to learn that one of them might make a better choice.

Have you looked at the Prices of the Coffee Lake Processors right now?!

an i7-8700 is ~50% more than Ryzen 2700X!!

And that's not even the K version -> 430€ for the 'normal' one and 450€ for the K.

And the 9700k is alredy at 500€ - that's HEDT Prices!

There is nothing new that those things will bring, except for higher prices and higher power consumption, I'd not wait for them or pay the "Intel Tax".

Sorry, but getting an Intel right now is stupid because of the rediculous prices.

And there is a good alternative that you should take right now!

@Stefan Payne, it's foolish to make judgements about tech without independent reviews and benchmarks.

I agree the increase in Coffee Lake cpu prices doesn't make sense. But obviously Intel doesn't think so.
