3x4GB vs 4x4GB DDR3 Performance difference

Go to solution Solved by OddyAte,

So I bought another stick, so anyone who has the same question, the upgrade (at least in benchmarks) is definitely worth it.

Hey guys,

I have the following setup and I wanted to ask you, would there be any difference if I added one more Kingston HyperX Fury 4GB DDR3 1866MHz stick. Userbenchmark said that my memory was performing very poorly (13th percentile) while PassMark said it was performing well. As for memory usage I've never seen it exceed 9-10GB. CPU-Z shows the memory running in Dual-Channel mode.

Setup:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K
MOBO: MSI Z87-G43 Gaming

RAM: 12GB Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 @ 1866MHz

GPU: Gainward GTX 970 but a GTX 1070 is soon going to be installed even tho 12GB of RAM is still enough I presume

Well with an odd number, you're only only getting single channel. A fourth dimm would give a great bandwidth performance increase, which may or may not manifest in gaming performance but will improve overall use

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Well from what I've read on some forums, the Z87 board can run 2 memory sticks in dual channel and the 3rd one in single channel. I presume this is why CPU-Z reports Dual Channel mode.

Passmark memory read is 12660 and write is 8060, both being ~65 percentile scores.
