PC not posting, any idea what it could be?

I usually build PC with used parts and I sell it back for small profit. I hunt for deals etc.

 

I scored £20 PC with G3250, H81 motherboard and 8GB of DDR3 (HyperX) and really crappy 500W PSU.

Worked fine.

 

Bought 4690K used for £60, and I put the CPU in and it worked fine also.

I bought used HDD (Yes used I know) 500GB for £8 from CeX, works fine though.

 

I decided to update Windows. Had 1709 and I wanted to do 1803, so I did.

 

I left the PC run overnight and update.

 

I wake up in the morning and boom, black screen no response.

 

Took the HDD out and reset CMOS, nothing.

 

Changed RAM slots, boom, it posts without anything I can see BIOS, or it posts to black screen asking me to add HDD. This is what is should do.

 

I plug in the HDD back, boom same issue, black screen like nothing's plugged into the monitor.

 

I think, maybe it's the HDD? So I plugged it into my HTPC. I took out old HDD with Windows 7 and added this one. I turn it on (took ages to go through post) and there it is, Windows was updating. I had to wait 15 minutes for it to update and I was finally at the desktop. The HDD is working fine.

 

I then decided to plug it back into the PC since it's working and updated. Still the same problem, can't get to the Windows or even see anything.

 

My thoughts on what I should do: update to latest BETA BIOS from 2014 (I used the one previous for stability). 

 

Anything else I can do guys?

 

EDIT: When the PC works without the HDD, I can get to the BIOS. Once I plug in the HDD and then unplug it because it doesn't work,  the PC STILL doesn't post, even to BIOS, it's like the HDD left it's memory on the PC and it's not letting it create a screen on the monitor. Once I change RAM slots over, it works fine. I can get to BIOS.

I've seen PC's acting weird with broken drives before, maybe a corrupted partition on your hdd is causing one BIOS to fail and another to let it pass

Hmm... I have no idea. I found a new BIOS from 2015 I'll give that a shot, and if it's the same BIOS I'll reflash.

Have you tried hotplug to get the drive read while you're in BIOS?

I have not. I tried updating the BIOS and I can't even post now.

 

I'll try Power + Restart button press for 10 seconds. It may work hopefully.
