144hz vs. 240hz

Ashiok

Hey Everyone,

Just wondering.. How big of a difference is 140hz and a 240hz monitor. I was thinking about getting a 140 but was looking at some really nice 240s so I wanted to hear your opinions.

Thanks!

The main things are the price and whether your graphics card is good enough to pump out 240Hz at your desired resolution.

Stop and think a second, something is more than nothing.

I have an ASUS Gtx 1060 3gb. Is that good enough?

What games are you running, and what CPU is matched with that? In something like CS:GO you could pump 240fps easily with most rigs, but in any more intensive games you'll really have to slam settings as low as they go to try and get 240fps.

Can confirm moving from 60Hz to 144Hz is awesome though, I have a 1080p144Hz monitor running off my R7 2700X and a 1080, it can keep most games at 120-144fps on high/ultra.

Unless you're a competitive gamer with details on lowest possible, I don't think you're gonna hit 240 all that much. Although, you can find out yourself with any kind of fps display

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

I play CSGO & Rainbow 6 but other than that not much other than that. My CPU is an i5 7600k.

The only game that's going to consistently hit that is CS:GO, especially with only a 1060 3GB

I'd stick to 144hz. But if you want a reviewed comparison:

If you're not very competitve and don't have great hardware to push that framerate, no point.

Get a good 1440p 144Hz IPS monitor.

The 1060 3GB won't get anywhere near 144fps at 1440p.

Yes it will, in games that matters.

Maybe if you do low settings, but then there isn't really any point, because you've spent more money and it would look better at 1080p. A GTX 1070 is widely considered the bare minimum for 1440p.

In most esports games you can easily get those framerates. I do so with my R9 290

That has 33% more VRAM. That's why a 1060 3GB isn't enough for 1440p. His older i5 will also be a bit of a problem.

I don't feel comfortable advising him to spend that kind of money on something he won't be able to utilize without seriously hampering the experience.

He'll be fine with i5 and gtx 1060 for CSGO easily. 1440p or not, VRAM depends on game too. Going for 1080p 240Hz would a worse choice even.
