Should I get a new build or upgrade my current one

platinum_

My current build has an i7 4790k, 8gb of ddr3, two 980s in sli and and regular hard drive nothing special and my mother board and a msi Z97 gaming 5. The reason Im asking what I should do is because I recently find that the games I play (GTA 5, Watch dogs 2, Rust etc) have been getting more laggy but I dont know if the limitation is my ram gpus my drive or my cpu.

Use task manager to find out what component is being used too much. From personal experience I can tell you that the 4790k can handle quite a lot in terms of graphics performance, having run it with a 1070. However, I'm not sure what resolution/framerate you're targeting.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

All of those games are notorious for being hard on the cpu. I would look at cpu and gpu usage when playing the games. If the gpu doesn't dip when the stuttering occurs then it's the gpu but if the gpu usage drops then it's likely the cpu. I would also go and disable sli when testing to rule out sli issues.

Monitor CPU, RAM, and GPU usage while gaming. It's possible your RAM is the issue. If the RAM usage is above 7gb ish that's probably what it is.

Rust is a massive ram hog, it hardly works with only 6gb. I had to borrow a couple 1gb sticks out of a spare computer for a while just to make it run decent until I got another 3 sticks of 2gb.

You didn't say you have an SSD though, you specified you only have a regular old hard drive. I stick SSD's into everything to broken laptops to Q6600 builds whenever I possibly can. It can easily turn a crawling old machine into something that feels far faster than anything that doesn't have an SSD. GTA V was nearly unplayable on my 5870 back in the day because of the 1GB of video memory, as soon as I put it onto a SSD it felt fine.

You shouldn't be having any issues with a 980 and a 4790k in GTA or Rust.

thank you all for your comments. I took your guys suggestion of just looking at task manager and it looks like in games like gta my ram and disk usage is being used up and everything else looks okay if any of you have a suggestion for and ssd or ram that would be great

if you aren't running a solid state drive that is a pretty simple upgrade that can make a huge difference

Like people have mentioned previously, RAM and SSD are easy and effective upgrades. I would suggest you do both if you have the cash. What dimm setup are you running your 8gb in? You might not have to buy a fresh set of RAM if you can try to salvage some of the older dimms as long as you get the same frequency. For example, if you are running four 2gb dimms, you could buy an 8gb or 16gb set in the form of two dimms, replace two dimms from your old set and keep the extra 4gb from the remaining older dimms. Bringing you to 12gb or 20gb respectively.

For SSD, I personally recommend Samsung. You can get their EVO line up because they are cheap and good (honestly, you don't have to buy the latest version if you want to save some money. They have been good for many generations). But since Samsung is often a bit pricey, you could check out this WD SSD. WD has gotten quite good.

What frequency is your RAM and also what range is your budget in?

My advice: 8gb RAM in two sticks and a 500gb WD SSD

You can buy more RAM later for a total of 16gb but it all depends on your budget.

Assuming you have 1 or 2 sticks of ram already, just buy a similar kit of ram for 16gb.

As for ssd, how much storage do you want/how much are you willing to pay?
