Need Help Upgrading My PSU

Serban Ungureanu

Hey guys!

Next week I plan buying the Gigabyte 2080 GPU and I think that my current PSU is not gonna be able to handle it. For this reason I started to look for a better one and at the moment I cannot decide between those two (if they are both bad please recommend me something :) ) .

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-seasonic-focus-plus-gold-full-modular-80plus-gold-sli-crossfire-single-rail-54a-120mm-fan-atx-p

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01AHRQW34/?SubscriptionId=AKIAJCMZ7EUWHXU3XRZQ&tag=xov-uk-21&linkCode=xm2

What would you go for? On the specs of the 2080 it says that the minimum recommanded is 650W , but some people in here said that it is actually more than enough because Nvidia makes these recommendations based on a high-end system, which I don't really have  :)

Thank you!

My rig at the moment:

i7 4770 3.4GHz

Gigabyte GTX 660

24 GB RAM

MSI H87-G41

Sirtec 500W

Zalman Z11 Plus

Would go with the Seasonic over the EVGA unit because Seasonic is 80+ Gold and EVGA is only 80+ Bronze

The Focus+ is a better PSU in pretty much every aspect except wattage. I would choose that instead.

Thank you @bindydad123. Do you think the 650W should work fine?

Even if you OC the 2080 at most I'd expect your whole system to pull 450w ish. You'll be totally fine.

Thank you @DocSwag

Then I guess I am gonna go for that one. One more thing, that I forgot to mention ( and this may be a really noobie question but bear with me, my hardware knowledge is quite limited): In the specs of the RTX 2080 it is mentioned that the connectors this GPU uses are 1 x 6 pins  PCIe and 1 x 8 pins PCIe. Now, I was looking in the specs of the PSU and it says it has 4x 6+2 PCIe connectors. Would these two be compatible?

The Focus Plus is the better unit.

The 1*6 on the Gigabyte means that, of the 6+2 pin connections that your PSU offers, you'll have to take one of the 6+2 connections and leave the +2 connection hanging off. Looks kinda ugly, but that's how it is. By glad you don't have a dual 6-pin card like my GTX 970 :P

6+2 means it's detachable, in other words, it can be used as either a 6 or an 8 pin connector so you're totally fine

btw what is your budget for the power supply?

Thank you for replies , @STRMfrmXMN and @17030644!

@17030644 My budget for the PSU is under 100. The GPU is killing me haha, but I have to upgrade and I will take this instead of the 1080ti for the RT cores which will help me in rendering (gaming is not really my interest)

500W should suffice assuming it has a strong enough 12V rail (35A+)

what do you think? 500W for 2080

A 2080 uses marginally more power than a 1080, so yes, a good 500W unit would be plenty for one with something like an 8700K.

Those cost a lot more tho; I would personally choose the Focus since it is a fair bit cheaper and just as good as the RM650i

Be quiet Straight Power 11, 550W.

Or Cougar GX-F if it has to be cheaper.

You're in UK, you should be able to get either.

They do that because they need to be on the safe side because of leagal stuff.

And they have to take garbage like EVGA White into account, that is why they do it.

Because they can't overcomplicate it and say something like "550W with 45A on +12V", nobody would get that...

How so? I've always been under the impression that they're similarly good, though admittedly the RMi came out before I followed pc tech so I'm not exactly familiar with it.
