GTX 670 is unstable as heck

try dip the clock speeds a bit. Old CPUs and GPUs can degrade over time to a point that they no longer hold the clock speeds they could when they were new.

I have an old GeForce GTX 670 from PNY in 2012 (yeah im that much of a budget loser) and when i run almost any game, the GPU usage can suddenly go to 100% without warning then the game crashes shortly after

 

Can anyone help me fix this issue in any way (or at least prolong how long it lasts)?

 

it rising to 100% then spiking down to 0% is what happens when I crash

Can you try updating the drivers?

max is when running the game and min is when idle

71 looks like too much, i've heard to NEVER EVER go over 80

Those temps are actually perfectly fine. I would try lowering the clocks a bit using software like MSI Afterburner, like @Jurrunio said.

is MSi Afterburner a good program to configure clock speeds, and how much lower should I go?

Yes, I'd starting decreasing it by 20MHz and then testing it in 10MHz increments if the GPU isn't stable then.

there are points where the stability gets even worse even though the clock speed is lower

 

is there something I'm doing wrong

Hmm. Try underclocking the memory as well. Could you also try installing older drivers to see if that does anything? (Ver. 330-370 probably)

Try out some older drivers in the 351-353 range. NVIDIA has been shitting on Kepler in their recent driver releases.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Click on "Beta or Legacy Drivers" and you can pull up older ones that way

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

even at lower than 500 MHz (the lowest i could subtract in Afterburner) it still crashes but things will last a lot longer than they normally would, there's no saving this card lmao

I've cleaned out the card, not sure about re-applying thermal paste
