Lenovo launches Thinkpad X1 Extreme with Up To 6 Core i7 and Up To 64GB RAM and GTX 1050Ti starting at $2079 USD

AlTech

Lenovo is launching their new Thinkpad X1 Extreme with Up To 6 Core i7-8850H, Up To 64GB RAM is supported, and it also comes with a GTX 1050Ti 4GB.

The laptop has a 15" display and is basically the mainstream version of the Thinkpad P1 Workstation. It supports Up to 2x 1TB PCI-E NVMe SSDs.

The base model comes with a 1080p display but an optional 4K HDR display is also available.

Lenovo is boasting that this device supports connecting Up To 4 indendepdant 4K monitors as usually Intel powered business laptops only support 3 displays.

This is a 15-inch X1. It's still thin and light—the weight starts at under 4lbs (1.7kg), and it's 0.7 inches (18mm) thick—but Lenovo is making good use of the extra space afforded by the 15-inch screen. The processor is bumped up to a hex-core 8th-generation Coffee Lake, paired with up to 64GB RAM. For graphics, there's an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. This can drive up to a 2840×2160 HDR display with support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and it's capable of showing 100 percent of the Adobe RGB color space. The screen also supports touch and a tilt-sensitive pen. And it comes with all the bells and whistles we'd expect from a premium Lenovo machine: two Thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, two USB 3.1 generation 1 ports, an SD card reader, fingerprint authentication, a shutter for the webcam. The battery is 80WHr, with a 135W charger.

If this sounds a little familiar, it's because the X1 Extreme is more or less the mainstream counterpart to the P1 workstation announced a couple of weeks ago. The P1 offers Xeon-branded CPUs and Quadro-branded GPUs, compared to the Core and GeForce-branded parts in the X1. But the machines are otherwise much the same.

Pricing of the X1 Extreme is ridiculously high in typical Lenovo fashion as it's a X1 branded laptop. It is available immediately starting at $2079 USD.

Definitely looks like an amazing laptop but wayyyy overpriced. And in using my T480, I haven't found myself needing a dGPU as the iGPU is more than enough for everything other than gaming and super intensive video editing.

I don't understand why they make this spec and dump a 1050ti in it xD

Its not for gaming, target audience most likely has 0 use for anything higher than a 1050ti

Really expensive considering the base model is only 1080p... with that said, if they can cool it properly maybe I'll get a refurbished one 4 years from now :P

We don't know when that will be though, they may have heard from nVidia that it won't happen for another 6 months and at that point they might as well use it in the inevitable refresh of this model, next year.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

A couple of months is still a while for this sort of product launch, especially considering they'd have had to factor it in during the design phase which would have been quite a few months ago. It's possible nVidia didn't disclose technical details to its partners in time for lenovo to use the new cards in this product.

It's just speculation, but there could be many reasons behind it. I'm sure lenovo wouldn't mind having the latest and greatest in their premium line.

Because a 1060 is just way too hot for that small of a laptop. Most manufacturers that needed up trying ended up with overheating monsters.

those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.
