Windows 7 --> Windows 8.1 Worth It?

maxvons

I was thinking of upgrading to Windows 8.1, as I quite like the new cleaner look of some UI elements, and I want to stay up to date with my OS. I don't like the idea of losing all my programs and games though, takes ages to download on my connection, and people have complained a lot about Windows 8 in the past. Would you say it's worth the money, or should I just stay with Windows 7 for as long as possible?

You can always try the trail version and than decide if it's worth it.

You know an os has failed when these kind of questions have to be asked.

I'd stick with windows 7 :)

Yes, but do I lose all my programs with the trial version?

I like windows 8.1 better than 7 [ with start is back and going straight to desktop ]

it's much faster (atleast for me) installing, booting, etc.

You can do an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 without losing any programs and files (not sure about the trial version if it would do the same). I updated through that way and had to reinstall a few programs that had compatibility problems. I would only get Windows 8 if you have the extra money to. If not, I would just stay with Windows 7. The thing that I like about Windows 8 is their fast boot times. :)

You have a point, I just haven't used any other Windows OS (on my own computer that is) than W7, so I'm really used to it, and I don't want to change it for something bad.

You could just choose the upgrade option, keeps your files and programs, chuck it on a virtual machine.

Did you install it through a disk or download? As the Microsoft website told me that I would lose all my programs (at least for the digital download)

I'd personally stick with windows 7. I've used windows 8.1 a few times and it's not better in my opinion. Any time the new UI comes up, I die a little inside.

Can I choose the "upgrade" option and keep all my files etc. if I purchase a digital download of it?

I think, this way of thinking have been the reason why W8 have had a very though time... people who are used to something really just perfer to stay with old stuff, thats fine with me, but just don't say the OS sucks because they need to learn new stuff...

I have been using W8 since it came out and i i really like it, took a few days to get used to it, but now i really like it. If you are willing to try a new OS (because it is really different) then i would recommand W8 ;) but if you like the old/used to stuff, then just stay with W7.

I'm not trying to be an expert, just trying to help where i can. You can freely decide if you like my advise or not.

Would you say Startisback is a sufficient replacement for the real start menu in Windows 7?

It's identical. Stick with 7 though, there's not really any point upgrading your install to 8. IF you were doing so, then a clean install is always best. back up your files and take a note of what programs you have , then install fresh.

It makes Win8 feel like 7. Stick with 7 unless you really want to get 8.

I installed it using the disk and I ran the setup in Windows 7.

I love the new Start menu in Windows 8. I took my time and organized it. Put groups of my programs together in the same column, such as tools, control panels, etc. I do not want to go back to the old startmenu.

i got windows 8 to get better fps in some games. and it worked :)

but if you get windows 8 and dont do anything about it thens its disgusting and a bit annoying.

as soon as i got windows 8 i downloaded a program called "StartIsBack" which lets you get back the start menu from windows 7.

in my opinion windows 8 was a good upgrade for me. but is it worth spending 150$ on it?

I gotta say that I'm not sure what all the fuss about that start button is, really don't miss it I think its much quicker pressing the start-button on the keyboard and then just type what you need...
