as some1's who's used a wide gamut monitor for gaming for many years (1440p 60hz atm)

Here's my current thought process. The next realistic monitor upgrade is going to be 4k/120hz/hdr, so that already kicks the 1080 out the window, which depending on your budget also skips the 20xx gen, this is NOT a bad thing. The bandwidths of the cable atm (dp1.4) only supports 4k/98hz with hdr enabled. I'd stick with 60hz for now (no need for 1080) if it goes overbudget. I

f you get a 1080 right now it's not futureproof (barely games at 4k), better off waiting on a better upgrade

Basically we are about 2 years away from having the ideal setup, the tech falls a bit short on multiple fronts.

Hi gang,

With RTX around the corner and GTX pricing coming down I'm looking to upgrade my GPU.

But do I really need it??  Will I benefit based on what I do?? Your feedback is greatly appreciated :)

Current Use:

80% work - 20% gaming

- Work: Graphic design, Photography, Image post production

- Lightroom & Photoshop: Image post-production (Large images/files ~1-2gb each)

- Illustrator: Graphic Design (multiple projects)

- Gaming: HoTs, Starcraft, Stardew,

Why I'm not sure:

- Type of monitor I have is not designed for gaming/higher res (wide gamut monitor)

- Work I do (software used) wont utilise the extra GPU power

- Games I run won't wont utilise the extra GPU power

Future use:
- Will purchase 4K wide gamut monitor and have dual screen setup off the one card

- VR: want to get my HTC setup at some point

Current build:

Part Picker - Current PC build

If someone can tell me how I can show parts list in this post instead of a link I will edit it. sorry about the external link :(

nvm. go with 1080! since you are gonna do VR and 4k. You need the 1080 minimum.

if you have the money and are going to upgrade to 4k but dont run GPU intensive games save some money and get a 1070. they are just under the 80 but cost less and no need to pay for super high in if your not going to use it.

if at first you don't break it you must have followed the directions

Just wait.

You will either get something better for the same price in the 2000 series or you can find one much cheaper on the used market.

your work might benefit from it. The 1080 is on Adobe’s list of tested GPUs for Photoshop.

Yes, which is what has me thinking to grab it. $750 AUD founder edition. But not sure if its OVERKILL and I wont benifit much from what I already have dollar vs performance >.<

hmmm... 1080 sounds like an overkill for your needs. Your GPU is a severe bottleneck. Get a 1060 6gb and call it a day.

Cheers, Thank you :) Even with dual monitor setup with one running 4K??

Current screen is limited to 1900x1200 res, which is why I'm thinking 1080 was over kill. But would a HTC VR setup benifit as much from the 1070??

current prices I'm looking at (AUD)

1080 - $750

1070 - $600

The minimum gpu for vr should be around a gtx1060 6g (depending on the game).

Knowing Adobe I really don't trust them with 2000 series and how long it would take to optimise current software. It's for work, so second hand is not a big deal, its a tax ride off anyways. Just don't want to pay extra money for something that I wont use. Eg, lambo in peak hour traffic xD

Many thanks for your input :) I would be looking at Eizo Coloredge CG248 4K 24in LCD Monitor. Cant seem to find the refresh rate, but i suspect it will be around the 60hz mark. Sounds like 1070 might be the sweet spot for this and potential future VR setup

The CG319X supports the DCI 4K resolution at 60 Hz with the DisplayPort 1.2 input or HDMI input. For the CG3145, 60 Hz is supported by both DisplayPort and HDMI inputs.

@xg32 based on that info what do you think??

Based on the type of hardware, it's not normal to have a try before you buy kind of deal. You need to be sure before you down $3500+ on one of these puppies!! O.o On the upside, they LAST for ages!!!

it's only an issue at 4k/120hz with hdr on, there's no problem there for 60hz monitors, i think a nicely priced 1070 would be perfect.
