need help with cpu upgrade: i5 4690k -> Ryzen?

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my gaming-semi content creation system (i'm doing some modeling, rendering). And I'm a bit lost between all options out there..

i5 4690k was running absolutely nice in 3d programs and games with GTX 760 > 960 > 1060. I feel some bottleneck now in BF1 though.

I'm looking at Ryzen 7 1800X - or - Ryzen 5 2600X - or - i5 8600K / i5 7600K and can't decide which one to pick. Can you guys help me decide? Goal is to upgrade and stick to it for some time same as I did with 4690K.

drop in an I7 4790K? Ryzen isnt an upgrade in gameing performance over 4th gen really especially not if overclocking. if you do want to swap platform to something newer id probably go for the R7 2700 and if thats not an option because budget the 1700 i guess. if you are doing heavy 3D stuff(thats CPU based) you might want to save up some more and go threadripper because the first gen have dropped in price and are now extremely good value.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

of those 3 i'd go for the 2600x, personally i'd go with the 2700x though. As a 8600k owner, paired with recent/future games, hyperthreading should be a requirement.

it's 200mhz single core performance more for the 2600, it's a big deal since ryzen lags in single-thread (some/most games)

yah you still need a more expensive motherboard though and and i wouldnt do it if your workload cant use more than 16 threads but the 12 core is a really sweat deal IMO :)

it's still the same deal with efficiency.

iirc zen 1 uses like 65w at 3.6ghz and 110w~ at 3.75~ (depending on the chip), then it goes up to something like 175w at 4ghz

for zen 2/+ it's like 75w at 3.8 and 110w at 4ghz, only going up to 175-200w if u push 4.2.

unless you really care about saving 50bucks i'd go with zen+/2

Ok, thanks for clarifying! So now I'm more like between 2600X vs i5 8600K..

This is it, I'm about to order CPU/board/Ram... but.......crap, no I still can't decide 2600X vs i5 8600K. I even flipped freaking coin!! Coin said 2600X, but which mainboard then? Will something like ASUS TUF B450M-Plus be ok for 2600X ? I plan to put it all into cube case.

Need a bit more pro/cons on these CPUs please!
