DDR5 Release Date?

I’m wondering if ddr5 is likely to drop any time soon and if it will be worth it for a semi professional workstation?

No one has a damn clue as to when it'll launch.

^^^ Plus if it's anything like DDR4 vs DDR3 you'll barely see any difference other than a slight drop in power consumption, but IDK if a normal user will even notice that, it'd be drowned out by the CPU and GPU.

2019 is the current estimate.

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. So basically nobody has any idea and if doesn’t matter anyway because we most likely won’t see much performance gain. I’ll go ahead and buy ddr4. Thanks!

afaik AMD is working closely on DDR5 so i would guess it will benefit performance more at least for AMD cpus

my guess on release would be 2020-2021 just in time for new AMD platform

MSI GX660 + i7 920XM @ 2.8GHz + GTX 970M + Samsung SSD 830 256GB

I believe when CPU manufacturers choose a type of RAM to go with, it's because they've identified a certain threshold needed to feed the CPU with data to maintain some performance mark. So there's really no point in worrying about when or what type of RAM comes out, because by that point, a new CPU and motherboard would've came out and you'll just have to upgrade everything anyway.

Into some server applications is end of 2019. 2020 should be full scale production starting.

We don't know when it's all switching over for either Server or Consumer, but probably 2021 in the consumer space.

i still remember the ddr3 and ddr4 launch, it was a hot mess for 2 years and slower than the previous gen.

DDR5 will be a fairly large bandwidth increase over DDR4. So, for Server-type applications, it's a big thing. For consumer? It's going to be a bit, which is why we're not sure when we'll be seeing it on Desktop. There's thought it'll be 2022 with PCIe 5.0 at the exact same time.
