Keep in mind that this is the Creator Edition, not the mass market version they'll provide later.  This is for developers, or just people who really, really want to see PC-free mixed reality and have money to burn.

45% bigger FOV than the Hololens is nice. Much better SoC. Standard IO. Occlusion. Seems like a nice upgrade over the Hololens! Sweet!

 

Just keep in mind that the FoV (Viewing Frustrum as Magic Leap is calling it) is still only large enough to render a large housecat fully 40" (100cm) away from you, and at 144"(365cm) it's enough to render about 3 6' (182cm) tall people.

 

I'm still super curious about the relationship between LuminOS and Google's Fuschia though. There's been hints along the way of them working with Google on their OS, and some of the parts in Fuschia seem like it was designed with AR headsets like this in mind... Curious.

Nah this is more like a really epic Hololens. AR, not VR. AR light field tech that can create visuals overlaying reality with a proper sense of depth. All of the things I listed at the start are only a few of the upgrades it has compared to the Hololens.

 

This fixes a *massive* issue with the Hololens that was the lack of occlusion. If you have a hologram on the Hololens that's 2m away from you and someone walks 0.5m in front of you, you still see the hologram and it's really... Weird. It's especially bad if you use your hands to interact with anything since you see the hologram "through" your hand

 

(Edit: correction, the Hololens has occlusion but only on objects further than 0.8m away which means if someone walks by close to you or if your hands are in the view they aren't occluded.)

 

I'm curious how they handle occlusion on this. Maybe something based on ARCore or Tango point clouds, considering their work with Google?

 

Think cyberpunk dystopia where you're walking down the road and your glasses show you holographic animals and advertisements and memes.

It is a standalone AR as in Augmented not virtual reality device that does all computing in your pocket so you don't need a high end gaming PC.

Still, it's all software. If there's no games for it then it'll go the way the rest of VR/MR/AR seems to be going, only faster

AR's applications aren't so much games tbh. VR is almost strictly better for any kind of serious games.

 

Wearable AR can have token games like the AR phone games there are, sure, but it's bigger use case is telecommunication, design work, visual info overlays, product testing (for furniture and stuff), and other similar fields.

 

And I don't know what world you're living on but Enterprise and Educational use of VR (both tethered and standalone) and AR (both standalone and mobile) is skyrocketing. It's not intended for mainstream consumers at this point, right now it's mostly about getting people comfortable with the idea as it scales out in Enterprise so it can scale up becoming cheaper and more widely available.

If you want gaming go VR. AR has many productive aspects to it.

You need something to do with the Software. Beyond a "killer app", it really needs a real function. If they don't have a CAD plugin by the end of the year, they're not a serious company.

That's kind of my point. All pf the people taking about how dead VR is because of it's prevelenace on Steam Hardware Surveys is kind of missing the largest segment of the VR market.

 

Premium XR's not dead, it's just undergoing the same kind of initial phase that laptops and cellular phones went through when they first emerged.

 

1) Hit the media build a lot of hype as they're sensationalized.

2) Cost insane amounts of money are massive cumbersome suitcases/bricks/alienfacemask that aren't practical or worthwhile for consumers although some ballin' consumers buy into it anyways.

3) Shift to a primary enterprise focus.

4) Refine the hardware, scale it down and reduce costs with economics of scale.

5) Return to a consumer focus with a more reasonable product.

 

Honestly it'll probably be 5-10 years before we can really judge how dead XR is.

It's different than cell phones or laptops since it doesn't provide anything you can't do with a laptop or cell phone

Yes and luggables couldn't do anything more than what your PC could do. And Cellphones couldn't do anything more than what your landline could do.

 

The level of contextual awareness that an AR headset could provide in terms of navigation, commerce, and media consumption *far* exceeds anything a laptop or even a phone could provide.

 

The level of immersion provided by VR is much higher than any other IO layout we have.

 

Ultimately it's not about whether the software does something unique, it's about the uniqueness of the interactions.

Honestly it'll probably be 5-10 years before we can really judge how dead XR is.

No one has made a f***ing functional multi-desktop space for VR. The business use case, especially on a travel situation, is so easy I was trying to convince an engineer I know to propose making it at his company. (There's a couple of ways of jerry-rigging the screens into the virtual space, but you have to actually have attached monitors. Which just makes the VR headset into a pretty crappy +1 monitor.)

Utility. And Utility per Cost. You can buy many unique interactions in life, but for something of high technical complexity, it has to do something that has extremely high Utility. Especially if you want it to be ubiquitous enough to really reach scale.

 

So we're back to "it's the Software, stupid" advice to most companies. Cellphones were publicly available for 2 decades before Smartphones entered the market. They had great utility from the start, but it wasn't until the Texting Era that they actually reach a Utility per Cost level that made them viable for the masses.

The problem is how Windows handles displays and composition. Blame Microsoft.

 

Simula and Safespaces are both Work-in-process Compositors for VR on the Linux side but they're mostly being held up waiting for some of the driver work to get done by AMD and Valve who are dragging their heels.

You're not wrong but my point was more that the uniqueness of the interaction is what facilitates new uses. If you interacted with a smartphone the same way as a desktop, or even a laptop, they wouldn't have been successful.

 

From a purely software standpoint a smartphone can't do anything a desktop can't. Hell even from a hardware standpoint you can get desktops with barometers and gyros and GPS. The difference between a smartphone and a desktop, or a cell phone and a landline --note I wasn't talking smartphones. Cellphones hit mainstream long before the smartphone era- is a difference in the interaction.
