It's all software?? What does that even mean. Society as we know it today wouldn't work if we didn't have software. Apple and Google are pushing AR heavily but it isn't all about games. I have actually used AR for measuring things on my phone

Simula and Safespaces are both Work-in-process Compositors for VR on the Linux side but they're mostly being held up waiting for some of the driver work to get done by AMD and Valve who are dragging their heels.

 

I know it's not the easiest technical hurdle to get beyond, but Oculus is so happens to be owned by Facebook. They couldn't find 2 million to grab some virtual monitor drivers and get a framework operational? Facebook's Execs are literally part of the market for that type of program interface. Cellphones hit mainstream long before the smartphone era- is a difference in the interaction.

Touchscreens made certain things work, but it was actually simply the size the made the touchscreen technology viable. Cellphones had gotten common before the Smartphone era, but they didn't start the saturation event until Texting took over. But uniqueness isn't that important for sustained purchases. It's all about the functional utility.

The fact that it's small so you carry it on you all the time.

 

It's no different than why current gen consoles have utility for some gamers over a desktop. The much simpler experience you have buying it vs a gaming PC, the simplified interface you control with an intuitive controller. And for the people who prefer PC gaming the utility is likewise in the interactions. The ability to customize it to fit your needs, the more in depth control you have over how the system operates, the wider range of interactions you can have from gaming over to productivity and web browsing.

You subsume Utility into Uniqueness. Smartphone interactions aren't unique. The most commonly used functions are technology that are a combination of 150+, 80+, 60+ and 40+ years old. What made Smartphones "work" was the "sufficiency of utility" they provided at a reasonable price.  It's the functional side of Opportunity Cost analysis.
