With the Threadripper coming very soon. The original 1950X and 1920x dropping price like crazy. I can find a 1920X for €335. Do you think I should get it?

I want to get the 2950X. But initially the price would be high, like €9xx for at least a couple of months. I do lose 4 cores and 10% per core performance. But I save €600. Although the 1920X isn't as fast as the newer Threadripper 2. It's still very good, especially for the price.

Would probably stick to 16 cores minimum with a 1950X

although AM4 is likely to see 12 or 16 cores next year with Ryzen 3000

pretty unlikely tbh

AMD would completely trash higher profits for 12 and 16 core on X399

Don't buy Apple M1 computers with 8GB of RAM

The 1950X is €579 now. So the 1920X is €244 cheaper.

I'm using a 5820k now. It's a little slow for some tasks. 16 core is the sweet spot in terms of performance vs price. I probably can live with 12 core.

The newer mobo with oversized VRM would probably be very expensive. Plus I need to get a bigger PSU and more radiator for cooling if I decide to get 24/32 cores. The cost will go up fast. My PSU and cooling loop can handle a 16/12 core CPU just fine.

Decision decision.....

Just pay for the 16 core

Although new cooling solutions aren't out yet, go for the Wraithripper, the Enermax AIOs may be having corrosion issues.

Or Thermalright Silver Arrow TR4

I'm running a custom loop with three 240mm rad. I only need to get a TR4 waterblock from EK.

Out of curiosity, what do you plan to do with the chip?

Major reason I ask is, are you even going to put that many cores to use.

If you're planning to replace the 12 core with a 32 core in the future just get that

if you're going to hold onto it for a long time get one of the 16 cores.

Oh yes. I game, but not a heavy gamer. I do a lot of graphic design and 3D modeling work.

Ah, so you got some applications that can leverage those cores.

On cooling, I have a Noctua air cooler on both of my TRs.  Does plenty good at keeping the chips cooled off (this with doing a break in with BOINC crunching over two weeks).

I know Zen 2(Threadripper 3) with 7nm will be a major improvement. If my 5820K isn't so unbearably slow for some tasks. I would like to wait it until Threadripper 3 next year. Now I can get a 1920X, and mobo and a water block for total €750. Which is a big upgrade for what I have now.

If for some luck, Threadripper 3 can still use X399 mobo with a BIOS update. I can get a Threadripper 3 CPU next year if it turns out to be real good.

If you end up with the 12 core probably get one of the top end X399 boards built for 32 cores just to have it be overkill for the future.

At some point you can probably pick up a cheap 32 core CPU

Good advice. So far only the MSI Creation mobo has real good VRM for a 32 cores.

Gigabyte/Asus/ASrock will have updated boards as well naturally.

I know Gigabyte will have an Extreme version mobo with a 10 phase VRM. So far Asus only has an (useless) cooling kit for the Zenith. Hear nothing from ASrock.

Asrock Taichi has the same 8 phase VRM(same mosfet) as the Asus Zenith. It can probably handle a 24 core with overclock. However I won't risk it with a 32 core.

If I decide to get the whatever 12 or 16 cores. I'll do it in the next few days before too late.

Yeah i'd go for the creation if you want something really good.

Neither 8 or 10 phases with IR3555Ms is enuf to stay cool without high speed fans under 24/32 core overclock.

Gigabyte uses worse powerstages (IR3556M) than the others on most of their motherboards, not sure about the Extreme board.
