How can I block pornography completley on my router?

P is bad

Hello, I would like to block pornography completley for my router, but I don’t want it to restrict me from visiting certain download sites, game sites etc.

Is there a way to blok all adult stuff for all devices that uses the home network? both LAN and wifi?

Using OpenDNS is a good easy start. Its fairly easy to bypass if you know how to change a device's DNS server though.

For most home applications, it works great.

Depending on what router you have, they most likely have some sort of web access filter that can be managed through your router login through your web browser. For example, I have a Netgear router, and I am able to restrict access to adult content simply by a toggle option.

what router? advanced routers have a web filter.

It normally works by blocking sites, so you won't visit porn sites.

Not possible. You can filter out SOME porn, but there's literally no way of filtering out everything. If someone wants to see porn, they will see porn.

Yes, there is no AI capable of figuring out every single website, picture, video and all known and unknown applications that could be/view porn. Just look at e.g. UK's porn-filters, they haven't reduced the amount of porn kids can see in the least. Like I said, you can filter out some, but if we're being realistic, you just cannot filter out everything, unless you cut off the entire Internet.

It's really hard to completely filter it out without impacting the rest of your experience. One option is to use a whitelist and manually add every site you want to visit - this WILL block all pornography but it's a bit of a nuisance to manually add every domain you don't want to block.

OpenDNS works well enough, you could also enable history logging so you can see if anyone has visited a site they weren't supposed to.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Im not that familiar with your router but looked into a briefly.  On router/security/userprofiles start adding keyword blocking as a start followed by domain blocking. There should be a little prompt on the left that shows you what to do exactly. However...a tech savy person can still get around those blocks.

My parents did this once when I was 16, but since I used a different DNS server on all my devices, I didn't notice. I only found out when my brother complained about it because he was 18.

You can use snort to filter out sites completely that have certain keywords containing "porn", "sex", etc.

Honestly, I wanna know the story here. Is this a parent doing parental things? Or is this a roommate playing a prank? I'm really hoping it's the later.

Yes, the best way is going to be a more professional setup, kind of like how an office would block it.

Get yourself a device, like a sonicwall soho which will become your new router.

https://www.amazon.com/Sonicwall-01-SSC-0653-SONICWALL-WIRELESS-N-TOTALSECURE/dp/B01LWIUT4Y (includes 1 year of service) (this is wifi capable)

https://www.amazon.com/Sonicwall-01-SSC-0651-SOHO-SONICWALL-TOTALSECURE/dp/B01LYGOMBX/ (includes 1 year of service) (no wifi)

Here is the thing about these - it's much more than just blocking porn, it will improve security, and more, but what you want is what's called their content filtering service.

So since nothing is 100%, they manage the database and update it all the time, sites get reported, etc. You pick the category you want to block (Porn, Illegal, Social, etc).

That category is then blocked, and it requires little input by you.

You can use the device to enforce your DNS server is used, but since all traffic flows through your router, it won't matter if they try that trick.

The device can also intercept and scan encrypted traffic, again this is a device that is has it's service as a subscription, so you can have varying levels after your first year.

I have linked you to the most basic hardware device they have, but you can go up if you do a lot more uploading/downloading.

This device will do what you want, but you can also use other things - Do not grant administrative permission to any computer that needs to be controlled. This will prevent most settings from being changed, and use an AV software that has parental control, configure it how you like and configure a password.

There are even more things that the corporate world uses to put its boot on the neck of the lazy porn addicts in the office, but the hardware option is a good one without any more detail, while the software option is also good, but you'd have to be more on top of things.

Have you tried unplugging it? Pretty sure that's the only surefire way to block all porn.

Pretty sure that using DPI-TLS to inspect encrypted traffic is going to cause a whole world of problems.  You are effectively trying to bypass the whole purpose of SSL, to provide end to end encryption, some sites will almost certainly break, ironically the ones with the best security.

You are effectively turning your network into a corporate network, where its pretty much excepted that anything they do not explicitly expect you to use will break.  By design, the Internet is not supposed to work that way.   I would be very surprised for example if things like games consoles worked on such a network, so you REALLY need to consider exactly how much gimping of the Internet you can live with.

Even if you completely lock down your network, can you be sure the people you are trying to block are not going to just use a friends network or mobile data to reach the same sites?  Google Images, Flickr, basically any image sharing site is still going to leak porn anyway.

I know one Flickr user in particular who constantly mixes photos of his grandkids with home-made porn, its quite bizarre and I'm pretty sure its impossible to block this sort of content without blocking the whole site.

This is all worth considering if you are potentially going to throw a lot of money at an imperfect solution that is just going to make the Internet unusable.
