Gtx 1080 or wait

Hello, i currently have a r5 1600 with 16 gb of ram and a msi gtx 960 2gb gpu. Im looking to upgrade the 960 to a 1080 but hearing the rumors that the new nvidia gpus are coming out soon its making me conflicted. Whats the best idea buying a 1080 now or waiting for 1180 / 2080.

Thanks!

Well, if you have nothing against waiting a couple of more months then you should wait and get the GTX 1180 instead because it will have much better performance then the GTX 1080 at about the same price!

Im personally waiting for the GTX 1180 and I also have a GTX 960 2GB which I think still runs fine so I'm rather waiting for the GTX 1180.

I would wait. Upgrade from GTX 9 to 10 series is not worth it. GTX 9 to 11 series is worth it.

What resolutioin/refresh rate are you playing at with your 960? No use in waiting for something that your monitor can't take advantage of.

Forgive me El Guapo. I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education...

Depends on you, if you can't stand your current GPU then buy 1080 now.

If you wait now your might ended up waiting forever.

Even if you wait for 1180 the pricing will be stupidly high especially true with Nvidia.

Then what is next you wait for the price to drop? what if there is another wave of mining frenzy? Then you wait for the price to drop MSRP?

This is assuming that the 1600 won't bottleneck the 1180 when it does release.

From what I've been able to find, the R5 1600 can max out any GPU up to a 1080 before starting to create a bottleneck.

Yeah, but even if it does bottleneck I still think it's better to wait for the GTX 1180!

Assuming the 1180 performs a bit better than the 1080ti you won't really get that much better experience. A 1080 will chew up 1080p144, and you will likely have to wait 6 months or more for a better GPU if you wait.

If you didn't have a GPU currently I would say buy now, but a 960 isn't bad at all. So it depends on what it's worth to you. In your situation I would wait

That's an F in the profile pic

Personally, I would wait. Although the rumors are just that, rumors, it is extremely likely that the 11 series cards will come on the market soon. It has already been 16 months since the last mainstream graphics card was announced (GTX 1080ti in March 2017). This is the first time NVIDIA has gone longer than a years between mainstream card releases. IT is highly likely that the new cards will be announced in late August and available in late September or October. If you can wait that long and afford the new card when it is released, I would suggest doing so. Also, the cost of graphics cards have been falling the last 2 months. That is likely to continue due to large stockpiles of 1080's and 1080ti's.

If it bottlenecks though, then there's no point in even really getting it unless you can live with a bottleneck until you can upgrade the CPU.

Sure, but when he upgrades his CPU after maybe 2 years he will still have a really good GPU.

Only a couple more years than a 1080Ti.

I've been debating on upgrading from gtx 1080 to either the 1180 or the 1080ti.

so people would say that you shoul get the 1080 now, however, the next gen gpu's may very well drop within the next couple of months. it may be a while to wait, but seeing as the 1080 is a great gpu in general, you might want to wait until the next gens drop so you can either get a next gen or a cheap current gen, maybe even a 1080TI because of the demand the new gpu's will retain. but thats just speculation. i could be 100% wrong, so whatever feels right

Sure, but a GTX 1180 would still probably be a lot better and at a much lower price.

the question is: can you afford a 1080ti right now? because the new cards will be the same price as the 1080ti and my guess is they will probably even cost 15% more or more...knowing nvidia and lack of competition right now, they won't gift use the 1180 for the price of a 1080 if it's faster or as fast as a 1080ti that's a given.

So you'd probably be waiting for a product that will take months to release, that will be in low stock and unavailable at launch for a couple weeks/a month, and for a product that you won't be able to afford/willing to spend that much fore anyways.
