so apparently this is called interlibrary loan. my local library has this service and already requested a few books

I work for a Library (IT). Interlibrary Loan is a system (or ideal, since there are regional systems) in which libraries can contact one another and share books on a temporary basis.

Usually, their catalogs are connected to a search system in which you can see which library has the book you are looking for, and then send them a request.

Typically, these systems are not nation wide. For example, Ontario uses ILLO (Interlibrary Loan Ontario). In the US, you might have ILL systems that are larger than a single state - I have no idea.

Check your local library and ask them. You'll need a valid library card/account/membership.

mostly because i can't afford books

Agreed.

I also use them to explore different books that I'm not sure if I'll like or not (PSA: The Martian is actually a really good book and I like it a lot).

Also used a library app called OverDrive to borrow and read the Maze Runner books off of recommendations from multiple friends, those are pretty good too.

The Martian is a great book. Just as good (some would say better) as the movie - but enough differences to keep you engaged if you’ve already seen the movie.

I haven't actually seen the movie, but I might at some point.

It's very good. A few things were cut or simplified to fit it into a 2-ish hour runtime, but nothing detrimental. Matt Damon nails the role.

Some of the science is a bit iffy - but for a "movie with science in it", it's incredibly realistic and accurate.

I would have figured as much.

The science in the book is actually really good and accurate for being science fiction. It likely wouldn't work at all in real life given that we have no idea as to the actual nature of Mars, but for the most part it's pretty accurate.
