So i was bored today and my cousin and I decided to see how my CPU is, anyway I have the AMD FX 4300 and managed to overclock it to 4.6ghz on the stock cooler, how long could I expect before the CPU decided enough is enough? Should I tone it back down as I plan to buy a new computer in the next week or so

It booted at 4.8ghz but as soon as i did anything the computer stopped, but im currently just on general internet at 4.6ghz and it seems fine

run prime95 small fft's and check the temps. if it is over 90, please turn it down a bit

internet = idleing, it will crash in the first few minutes of overheating 100% sure

On a stock cooler it will hit thermal limits and shut down at 100 C before you can really do any damage with voltage.

run prime95 small fft's and check the temps. if it is over 90, please turn it down a bit

Its an AMD processor the max thermal temp limit is 65C, OP probably baked the chip, AMD does not make its processors the same way Intel does and as such they have a far lower thermal limit. Itel rates most of their processors into the 90C range. That chip wont last long if you run it that far out of spec.

I have had an 8150 auto shut off at 100C. Had a AIO cooler fail and managed to get in the bios long enough to watch CPU temp reach 99C and shut off.

I have also had my 8350 into 90C range before with ALOT of voltage and core speed. Both chips run fine and you are correct they are rated for a much lower temp.

So him running hot for a week or so wont kill it off immediately and he will either BSOD or auto shut down because the CPU will spike in temp very fast with the stock cooler.
