Amp needed for HD 650?

Just wondering how necessary an amp is for the HD 650s. I have an 1150 chip in my motherboard and an iPhone 8. Will it make much of a difference using an amp? I know they have quite high impedance

Whether or not you're buying an amp, is not dependent on how much you're spending on the cans.

I don't really like my music that loud so volume isn't the issue. Is there. Difference on sound quality is what I'm wondering.

 

Also: how do these compare to the M50x's? They look pretty good spec-wise and have low impedance so should play nicely with whatever input I have

No difference, unless one is using a hidden EQ.
