Software to add a foreign network to same lan?

Is there any way to add a computer that's not on my network and have it act like its on the same network?

 

I'm trying to play with someone else on Minecraft and I want to use the lan function so we can play together, but he's not on my network

Hamachi is probably the easiest if you aren't familiar with VPN.

 

There's usually a layer 2 or layer 3 consideration, for just playing minecraft any sort of LAN<->LAN tunnel would work like traditional IPsec or OpenVPN since it doesn't require hosts to discover each other via the same subnet.  If you didn't have a more automated solution like Hamachi you'd have to set up a tunnel on both routers.
