I'm glad to see more competition in the market, but I'm unconvinced by the Tesla business plan. Time will tell I guess. 

are they not planning to use the gigafactory which is expanding at a very rapid rate, or is that 100% for battery production? I'm not sure.

The Gigafactory is all about battery production -- EV manufacturing takes place in Fremont.  The separation is likely important since batteries also include energy storage (Powerwall, Powerpack and the like).

I'm sure they could spare in the space in an emergency though... right?

Making and selling batteries is probably a more profitable business than cars, if it were me I'd be making space for that.

They'd probably have to rush things in and create a 'tent' assembly line like the one they recently put up at Fremont.  It also depends on how easily they can get necessary supplies to the Gigafactory besides the batteries, since I'm sure their supply chain still tends to revolve around Fremont.
