My new build turns on for 1-2 seconds and then turns off!!

294728282727

So recently I completed my second build. I went to turn it on and the fans started spinning and lights on the mobo lit up. They they all stopped. I removed the gpu, mouse keyboard, etc and ran the build out of the case. I tried redoing the front panel, resetting the CMOS  etc. I have also used the PSU on another build so I can rule that out. Replacing the memory has made no difference. It is either the mobo or the CPU. An led on the mobo says the cpu is not detected however I am not sure if it is definitely the CPU that is the problem. Please reply on what I should do.

You should try to go through this list - it often helps people.

Beyond that - could you post a couple images of the inside of the case - aimed at the motherboard? That'd help up identify if something isn't properly plugged in.

I've had more issues with MSI motherboards than any other.

Ryzen also isn't the only processor requiring BIOS updates, it happens with Intel CPUs as well.

Do you have a way to test the CPU in another system? If not, might be time to start an RMA.

Tthe problem is your mobo and CPU aren't compatible my dude. G5400 only supports 300 series boards.

I do not have a spare lga 1151 cpu so I am returning the cpu to the seller and will ask for a new replacement.

Oh that’s annoying. It says on the box however that the chipset supports all lga 1151 compatible cpus.

Yeah you can thank intel for all that confusing stuff. When the b250 mobos launched that WAS true; however, with Covfefe lake they added cpus that had the exact same rearrangement of pins but some previously unused pins were now used for power delivery and intel decided to just not make then backwards compatible instead :/.

Yeah they should be pretty close. You might also want to consider returning the mobo for an h310 or b360 mobo tho as those support the newer higher core count coffee lake cpus so you'll have a better upgrade path.

Unfortunately, chipsets and sockets can be confusing, especially went Intel pulls stuff like this.

For future reference, try a website like PCPartPicker before ordering your parts, you put together a custom build and it will tell you if there are compatibility errors. Really helpful for those not 100% sure of hardware and their compatibility. Include me xD
