SSD without AHCI?

Hey guys,

 

so apparently my ASUS P5KPL-AM SE does not support AHCI, since I will be getting my Samsung 840 tomorrow I wanted to know if that's really that big of an issue.

I am aware of the fact that my board only has SATA 2 and that this wil slow the SSD down quite a bit, but what happens if I don't have AHCI?

Sata2 is way worse than being forced to not use ahci.

 

Edit: but i think you lose some stuff like trim if you use IDE.

And what about TRIM? Is that an AHCI-Only feature or is that a windows-thing? I think TRIM is very important for the longevity of the device

yeah, just added that. Either way a ssd will make a huge difference compared to your usual HDD. if you get a new board and everything you can still enable that (kinda difficult but you can do it.)

Well okay that's a bummer then... I'll be keeping this board for a few months (I'll build a new PC when Star Citizen comes out) Are you sure that this won't damage the SSD in any way?

Pretty sure it wont.

but you should completly reinstall everything with your new pc and format the drive.

yeah since I will need to re-partition my current HDD anyways I decided to save all documents, savegames and all other important stuff onto a USB drive and then completely wipe my 640GB HDD.

Good thing about Samsung SSD is that even if you don't have trim you can use the Samsung Magician software as needed and it does just about the same thing.

Please don't spread bullshit like this around. TRIM works just fine under IDE mode, as ahci or sata is NOT a requrment for TRIM.

With a little bit of searching u can find a modded bios, that has AHCI enabled. I had P5KC board and also came without AHCI; bios mod fixed that problem for me :)
