GTX 1180 vs 1080. Looking for advice

Demm
Go to solution Solved by Indominus-Rex,

Wait wait wait. Never buy an old gen GPU when you know new ones are coming out unless you absolutely have to because or not you'll be crying yourself to sleep once you see how well the 2080 compares to a 1080. Alot of people have learnt their lesson with the 980 ti after the 1080 came out but that was a new architectural leap which is not the case this time around so there won't be much of a performance increase but I'd still expect slightly higher numbers.

Hi everybody,

I have a this monitor for some time now - Acer Predator xb271hu (1440p ips g-sync 165hz), paired with GTX 970. And safe to say I don't get those 144FPS in the games I play so I am thinking of getting the GTX 1080 as it represents the best value for money for the performance I need. However with the 1180 rumored to be coming out next month I am on a crossroad as to what to do, given that we don't have any confirmation about when they are coming out, the price and performance difference.

Could you please give me your though?

Get the 1080ti or wait...  A 1080 will still have issues pushing those frame rates at 1440p max graphics.

Well, when I am looking at benchmarks, the 1080 gets 120 to the Ti's 140 both on Ultra. I don't need to play on Ultra, since the difference in graphics is too little to notice. If I play at Very High I believe that I can get the 140FPS, don't you think?

You can play on high and be fine.  It's up to you.  The new GPUs are unknown at this point, but you can expect a good bump in performance from the 1180 over the 1080.  If you can hold out then do so.

Just remember you don't have to be maxing out the 144hz. 100FPS is plenty and most people don't really see a difference going over that

That's an F in the profile pic

you do need a graphics card upgrade...so selling the 970 to upgrade to a 1070ti or 1080 would be something that would radically improve your gaming experience on this monitor...i dont know about nivida new cards...amd is said to perform a 7nm vega GPU soon...this might push nvidia to release better cards...it's a strong possibility that new cards would be available for purchase in september this year...but a 1080 would be a quick sell  then...depends if you need a card now for the games you play.

exactly what he said, most these people who say get a 1080/ti dont even have one themselves, just wait it wont be that long. why drop 700bucks on a gpu now and in 1-3 months new stuff comes out for around 700, and your 700 card is now 450 bucks lol.

Like others say I would wait, seems to me you have been playing with the 970 and it seems to do ok for now, I would only say get a 1080 now if the 970 is unplayable on any of the games you play, if it’s ok for a few more months then wait for the new gpu’s

Do this, even with some of the rumors being that they have an overstock of standard GPU's coming soon (TBH I have no idea if this is true, just heard it from a friend group) if at all possible hold out into the half year going into 2019. When you have that money on hand and the gpu goes up for retail day one then you will probably save a ton and be one of the first to get a hold of one!

With a new card only a month away it'd be rather foolish to buy something now, especially if you already have a card.

I think you've got that though ;)

Though, for current gen cards, the 1070Ti is probably the best value for money. Depending on how much free cash you have right now, it's not too hard to get a 1070Ti/1080 for a couple hundred dollars.

Haha, AMD's cards have been pretty lackluster for the past few years. I wouldn't be waiting on anything they're pushing out.

You don't need to own a card to be able to see benchmarks and understand what they mean.
