Posted June 6, 2018 Interacting with your system is always faster on a SSD, regardless of the task. It's not relevant to the speed of compiling, though. SSDs are actually more likely to fail when used in the same way HDDs are. In your case, all SSDs that you've had were a lot smaller in terms of capacity, this means that you surely wrote A LOT less data on them during their lifespan. You've also probably had more HDDs than SSDs in general so it's an apples-to-oranges comparison. In addition to all that, why do you think no companies archive their data to SSDs or use SSDs as main backup storage? Cost is one thing, sure, but some of them use 10-15K RPM SAS hard drives that are just as expensive per TB. You guessed it, it's reliability and the relatively small amount of data that you can write on SSDs in their lifespan CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/934833-ssd-vs-hdd-for-coding/#findComment-11417223 Share on other sites
 Although SSDs have a limit of how many times it can be read/written so this would in theory damage the SSD faster than the HDD. Thank you We have moderation guidelines to follow when moving threads, it is required to say in the thread that it has been moved so the poster knows that it was moved and why, and for anyone else that has participated in the thread. The post did not help answer your question because that was not the intent of the post. There were better ways to handle this if you did not know why that comment was posted and didn't think it was helping answer your question. Posted June 9, 2018 To add to what has been said above, there is no way for an automated message to be sent when a topic is moved, so it is our moderator policy that when a topic is moved, a short note should be left in the topic to explain this. The note is not a disciplinary message, and we don't keep track of how many topics belonging to a user we have moved, it is just to tell you that action has been taken, so you aren't confused about why the topic isn't where you posted it originally and so that you can learn where topics should go. Ideally, this would be done as an automated notification, but as that isn't an option it is a post in the topic instead. This is not a case of the moderator being rude, it is just them doing their job. All of the moderators on this site are volunteers, giving up their time to make the site better. This means that they should not have to stand for any attacks or abuse that is thrown at them. Occasionally, mistakes are made. If you believe a moderator has made a mistake, or you have any concerns about a moderator, please send a PM to myself, Whiskers, and/or the moderator in question, and we will try to resolve it as soon as possible. Arguing about moderation in the public forum does not help the situation. I am leaving this topic open for now, to allow for further discussion on the original premise of this topic. If you would like to continue to discuss moderation, please instead send me a PM, and I will be happy to continue the discussion there. However, if there are any more posts made regarding moderation in this topic, I will have no choice but to lock it. Posted June 10, 2018 860 pro is fantastic when it comes to SSD reliability, double the tbw of a 850 pro. Bought one myself, already have two 850 pros for OS duties and theyve been fantastic. Do remember to constantly backup of course Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/934833-ssd-vs-hdd-for-coding/#findComment-11430069 Share on other sites
