Searching for DD-WRT or Open-WRT compatible acces point

Hi everybody,

im searching for a new access point since i bricked my TP Link TL-WR841N by mistake.

My budget is around 50-100€ (germany). If it is really neccessary to spend more i will think about it.

I do want to run the access point with the Private Internet Access VPN. So some form of openvpn compatibility (open-wrt, dd-wrt, ...) is required. And realisticly im not connecting more than 2-4 devices at the same time.

I already found the family of GL.iNet GL-AR... mobile access points which come preinstalled with dd-wrt and 16mb of flash memory. But they are using a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9531 - 1 core x 650 Mhz processor and i read that the VPN performance is mediocre. Although they are quite useful little things to play with.

Thanks for your help

Instead those both, I offer you gargoyle router

it's easier than OpenWRT (it based on it) but much more compact than DDWRT (and newer in term of kernel)

I've been using it for 4 years and all my TPLINK running the newest version of it.

As for VPN try it with your GL AR INET

I used to have one but since it doesn't come with adapter so I'm using my phone adapter for it, and unfortunately it blows up and also damaged the unit. I think the phone adapter isn't good enough for 24/7 usage.

Have you tried VPN on it yet?

The most popular hardware for gargoyle is WR1043ND v1/2, and WDR3600

Limitation still applied since it just home router hardware based.

The most important thing here is your internet speed and your expectation of it, if you going to run VPN on 50mbit connection or more and you expect to get the exact same speed, just forget it.

There are better choice obviously.

Linksys WRT1200AC v1 (Caiman)
Linksys WRT1200AC v1 (Mamba)
Linksys WRT1200AC v2 (Cobra)
Linksys WRT1900ACS v1 (Shelby)
Linksys WRT1900ACS v2 (Shelby)
Linksys WRT3200ACM v1 (Rango)

However with that amount of money, I'd rather get mini PC and build a pfsense router, at least I know what hardware I will get.

I just found the TP-Link Archer C7 V2. It has got more storage an a better cpu for 80€.

What do you think?

Since I have 50k internet and im not doing crazy stuff with it i dont need perfect router performance but it would be nice to have some headroom to play with.

DDWRT has a database on their website for compatible routers I'd start there.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
