What are the best programs for microarchitecture design?

I've been getting into microarchitecture design, and I'm trying to figure out what tools I need as far as software.

I've been using Logisim, and I've gone as far as designing and testing a complete 16-bit CPU, what I'd consider MISC (9 instructions). My problem is that Logisim is an educational tool, not necessarily meant for real design work. My hope is to physically build a working CPU, and I don't know if Logisim is a good fit for that, or if it's even in the right realm. If anyone has any experience with this stuff, I'd appreciate your input.

@Coaxialgamer, I know you've been working on a CPU -I'd love to know how you're approaching it.

"Do as I say, not as I do."

-Because you actually care if it makes sense.

I'm actually not using any particular software tbh, i draw circuits. I have used logisim but i found it limiting for what i was trying to do.

Probably the best solution is to either :

-write a simulator in  software

-write a simulator in HDL like verilog or VHDL.
