1080p 144Hz, X61 on GTX 1080?

asand1

I already have a Kraken X61 running on my Xeon X5680. I might get a 1080p 144Hz monitor. If I do I was thinking i might pick up an H7 or 212 Evo for the CPU and mount the X61 on the GPU. Any thoughts? I already have an Arctic Accelero III on the GPU. Am I being dumb? My main concers are that the GPU is more of a heater than the Xeon, and the CPU puts the pump at the top of the loop which is not good.

Here is the system with the old GTX 960 still in it.

Going through all that effort likely wouldn't help you very much for gaming.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Not high at all, I'm mainly worried about the pump running dry, and the added heat of a higher refresh monitor.

You're not super likely to maintain 144fps at 1080p with that CPU anyway, so the CPU will likely be under the most pressure.

Probably not worth it. What are your GPU temps currently?

GPU ran at 51c in Firestrike extreme 1924Mhz 1080p 60Hz a month after installing the Accelero.

@asand1
you will not achieve 144HZ ever on that weak CPU, and you will be bottlenecking that poor GTX 1080 like crazy.

Lol, you would be suprised. Video coming shortly. Is CSGO enough? I can also do Overwatch. Any other games you would like benchmarked?

That "Weak CPU" runs at nearly 100% while the CPU barely breaks 40%.

almost any CPU can go above 144 FPS in CSGO and Overwatch, i was talking about AAA titles

can't you see how bottlenecked that GTX 1080 is? look at the percentage next to the GPU Temp, the one in the middle

The GPU is hitting 89% @ 0:36, 97% @ 0:41, 97% @ 0:51, all while the CPU is less than 50%. There is nothing holding that GPU back, do you even know what a bottleneck is?

i don't think they are mismatched. If the CPU can do 144Hz @1080p will depend on the game you will be playing and if it used just one core or all cores for example. It may not be ideal but certainly isn't impossible to get 144Hz ever as said above. At least i think it's a gross exaggeration.

You can always try and oc it a little higher if temps are ok as you say, there are higher oc out there for that CPU

I don't really expect to get 144 in AAA games, but 120Hz monitors are not as common.

most games don't use more than 2 or 4 cores, even if you see the load being spread around all cores, the actual usage is 2-4 cores, ofc some games utilize more (Vulkan for example).

and yes when the GPU usage gets lower there's a bottleneck, but to be fair all CPU's get bottlenecked at 1080p at some point, but the difference is at what point each CPU gets bottlenecked, if you get 200 FPS in GTA V while your GPU usage is 80%, that's a bottleneck but it still will be an amazing experience, but if you get bottlenecked already at 80 FPS and 100FPS? that's just bad when you're aiming for 144HZ, it's alright if you don't mind that but i'm just telling you in lots of games you won't use your GPU to it's full power or even your Monitor.

yes you can easily get above 144FPS in CSGO or Overwatch etc etc etc etc.

also GPU usage reached 76% 87 FPS at 0:57

A GPU running at 97% is not bottlenecked. Bottlenecked GPU means the CPU is holding the GPU back, which is not the case here.

also not mention the realistic gameplay at 2:30, GPU usage goes down to as low as 60% at 80-90 FPS

In CSGO, where IPC and single core speed is king the Xeon is running at about 90% and still hitting up to 248 in game.

an ancient i3 can hit 300+ fps in game...........

and what 90%? there's no overall CPU usage...

it is hitting 97% in some parts of the game where GPU would be utilized more instead of the CPU, but again watch the video at 2:30, that's the realistic gameplay you should be expecting and the GPU usage is mostly around 60%, even goes below that.

you can look at the sky in GTA V and get 200 FPS are you saying thats realistic?
