Define r6 fan setup for i7 w/ 360 AIO and 1080Ti...

Upgraded to 8700K and 1080Ti in the Define r6.  With 212 EVO, the CPU temps are fine at stock but the 1080Ti is throttling at 80c and 1750Mhz with the case's 2x 140 intake and single 140 exhaust.  So I bought Thermaltake Water 3.0 360mm to open up the case for smoother airflow and get the CPU heat out of the case so the GPU can breathe better.

 

My question is... What fan setup should I go with? 

 

Option #1:  360 AIO on top exhaust, front 2x 140 intake and rear 140 exhaust. (standard addition of AIO to base case)

 

Option #2:  360 AIO on top exhaust, front 2x 140 intake and rear 140 INTAKE (potential airflow from rear fan over VRMs, intake from front and back and up thru top)

 

Option #3:  360 AIO on top intake, front 2x 140 exhaust and rear 140 exhaust (opposite #2, Science Studio youtuber did this)

 

Option #4:  360 AIO intake in front, 2x 140 exhaust on top, rear 140 exhaust (similar to #1 but better balance between intake and exhaust?)

 

Figured before I trial and error this, I'd see who has experience with these setups.  Thanks for any suggestions, all.

Personally I'd go with option 3 or 4. Generally speaking you always want all intakes to be filtered, and a balance airflow in and out of the case. 

 

Option 1 is also good though, because this way the 1080ti gets enough fresh air versus warmer air through a RAD. Though you dont have a "balanced airflow"

One more though...  

 

360 in front exhaust, 140 rear intake, 2x 140 top intake.  Weird, I know... but more cool/fresh air blowing more directly on the back of the GPU?

 

I may just try them all over the next couple weeks and see how temps are since this is just a lot of theorizing on my part.

I have a similar set up to what you're asking about.  I went with 360mm AIO in the front (intake), one fan on the bottom (intake), two fans on top (exhaust), and one fan in the rear (exhaust).  Temps are quite good.  Under load the GPU is 68-72 and the CPU is 40 - 45

Oh, totally forgot I could add fans in the bottom.  I like the thought of another intake there, that would balance the airflow pretty well I think?  3x 120 + 140 intake and 3x 140 exhaust?

 

Also, if you mount the 360 in front, do you have to move that panel to the backside?

You don't need to move the panel but you'll need to remove the HD tray.

Thanks.  This prompted me to RTFM.  I can mount a single 3.5 inch drive on the back of the panel after I move it, which is perfect. 

 

Ordered another 140mm Fractal fan for consistency.  Think I'll go with 360 AIO in front intake, 140 bottom intake, 2x 140 top exhaust, 1 rear 140 exhaust.

My man!  I type 'read the manual' a lot on case and mobo questions.  FD does a great job of supplying 'additional information' showing all possible fan and HD configs.

 

I also attached my 3.5" drives that way with no issue.  The case is great.  I would suggest a fan grill for the bottom intake fan so your PSU cables don't get bit.

Results for trial #1:

 

360mm AIO top exhaust, 140mm fan rear exhaust, 2x 140mm front intakes...

 

1080Ti temp is now 75c at 2012Mhz.  No throttling, much better airflow.  Great case, obviously noise went up a bit by taking that sound-dampening cover off the top, but such a huge upgrade from the Antec Nine Hundred (tho I miss it).

 

Going to put another 140mm on the bottom for intake tomorrow when it arrives.

Moved the panel to the back, removing the HDD trays.  Aida64 maxes cpu at 89c now, 5c reduction just from changing case layout.  Now to play in Bios to OC properly.
