Go to solution Solved by Fasade,

I am keeping the Corsair TX850 that I have for now and we will see what the future holds.
Thanks guys.

Hello, I am building a new system and I would like to ask if I should keep my current psu or replace it in terms of compatibility.

I currently have a Corsair TX850 v2 Enthusiast Series from the year 2011.

I'd change it. Parts inside degrade over time and PSU is a comsumable. This unit passes its warranty for years already.

I would say the PSU is compatible with the parts you've picked out. You have enough power to run your whole system and an additional high-end GPU too. My only concern is the age of the PSU and that is only Bronze certified.

I know it's more than enough, the me 7 years ago had minimal knowledge, what worries me is if its compatible.

If it's compatible with what I am about to buy I can use it for 1-2 months until I buy a new one. That's my concern

it's fine. it's more of a preventative maintenance like changing engine oil, if you know what I mean.

And why would that be an issue?

Well, if you don't pay the electricity bills yourself, there is no issue. But the difference in cost to a higher end PSU might be saved over time due to higher power efficiency.

Well, the connectors haven't changed since 2011, and you'll have enough SATA connectors and an ATX connector, so yes, it is compatible.

id keep it, even though its old it was a good unit when it launched and with your current system it hasent been pushing much load anyway so its probably still in decent condition

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Yes, because when you're using a 300W PC, those extra 5W sure do make a difference

We go for 80+ Bronze rather than White because something with efficiency that bad usually means something unreliable used inside (heck, not even Bronze ones guarantee good quality). It's not because of saving power since we arent running power hungry servers 24/7

Just an extra question. I am mainly gaming with occasional content creation. Is 80+ platinum overkill or should I go for 80+ Gold ?

Don't bother with the efficiency. It won't make the costs back. Just get a good PSU

I am looking at Corsair and EVGA, I was just wondering.

There's no harm in asking. Which models specifically? EVGA branded PSUs are not very quiet. For Corsair, the RMx and up are quite quiet.

There are many good PSUs available from many different brands.

So you're saying that the Silverstone ST75ZF and 85ZF (Zeus Series) was bad quality at the time??

Ähm, no.

Efficiency doesn't have to do anything with quality...

And you can build an inefficient PSU that will survive the next decade easily...

Don't look at Manufacturers, look at models.

And the EVGA Lineup isn't that great. Most of the things they have are on the louder side.

Since you are in Europe:
be quiet Straight Power 11, Cougar GX-F and Bitfenix Whisper M is an option.

1. Why not go for Ryzen?! There is talk about another round of Spectre/Meltdown issues...

And the Ryzen isn't that bad either, especially the 2000 series.

2. You should replace it, because its already 7 Years old.

With such an old PSU, chances that you run into issues is very high.

3. No Graphics card???

I'm talking about units available brand new to make it easier to understand. Older stuff do tend to have worse efficiency even if they are durable because of tech, I know that.
