That depends, if the site loads a hidden tab/new window tucked away in a corner minimized it could still mine after one leaves the site.

I guess, but shouldn't be a problem with a decent browser.

Even decent browsers might not catch them. No idea what chrome does towards such scripts, I think Opera prevents them idk tho, I usually get Avast yelling at me when one tries to load xD

Most browsers now don't allow new windows to be opened without a click preceding it somewhere.  And even then, it will probably tell you it prevented a popup.

This is especially true for a page with scripts loading cross-domain or a page with nothing but js in the body.

This is correct.

Don't assume that it has stopped just because you've closed the browser.

Linustechtips or one of the other youtubers already covered this and yes there are miner bugs out there that will keep going even when the browser is closed.

One reason why you should really stay away from torrent sites like thepiratebay because they're notorious for this.

If I were the OP, I'd reinstall windows.

If they don't want to go that far, at least run an offline scan in windows defender, install malware bytes and run a thorough scan from there, install Ccleaner and clean out your browsers and look for problems in the registry..

Be really thorough because miner bugs can be tough to detect and get rid of.

As if it isn't enough that they're making our GPUs crazy expensive eh?

Even then you still can catch a computer illness. There was one a few years ago that made it into headlines.

I've had it happen, most places will wait for you to click which tricks chrome into thinking you permitted it(not every time), some places even manage to bypass the ad blockers.

Nothing is 100% safe, especially when money is involved.

Though, if you keep a browser updated, the risk should be quite well mitigated.

Linux, as a whole, is just much more resilient to BS like this.

In windows, processes can easily hide themselves, acquire elevated privilege, etc etc.

I have no problem with Linux. I just can't do much of what I want to do on it sadly. My Oculus Rift would be pretty useless if I switched to Linux for example.

So, it's not really a practical solution for most people.

Yup, that's the case for many people.

Running linux on a desktop/laptop makes it a lot more useful for many things, as well as more secure, however ... it also makes it a lot less useful for other things like gaming, availability of commercial software, etc.

I use open source software exclusively, both for work and privately, but not everyone will have that option.

If you can afford to leave windows behind, then i strongly urge you to give linux a go.  You will not be disappointed.
