1080 or 1440p - g-sync or not

10ghz

I'm planning on getting a new monitor but i can't choose between 1080p or 1440p (144hz).

I am also going to build a new pc with gtx 1080 and ryzen 2700x.

Should i buy a display with g-sync or not.

I do not play any exact game.

This is the displays i have been looking on:

G-sync is a waste of money, should get a 1070ti with current pricing.

Likely just get one of the $399 1440p 144hz IPS free-sync displays, otherwise get one of the 1080p 240hz displays if you're going 1080p.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

If you "need" aboslute highest quality settings, the GTX1080 won't reach 144hz in 1440p. For example, in my main rig, the Witcher 3 gets me 50-70 fps 1440 on absolute highest (higher than ultra) settings. It's very playable thanks to g-sync (no frame stutters/tearing etc), but I decided to turn down a few settings and now get 70-90 fps. So if you want ultra quality AND high frame rates, 1080p may be the way to go.

G-sync really shines when you are around 60fps in ultra quality. When playing CSGO you'll likely hit 144 fps+ so no use for those things.

Main rig: i7 8086K // EVGA Z370 Micro // 16GB Gskill TridentZ 3200Mhz CL14 // Sapphire Pulse RX 7800XT// a variety of noctua cooling // Corsair RM750x v2 //  Fractal Meshify C

Secondary rig: R5 3600 // MSI B450i Gaming Plus // 16GB Gskill FlareX 3200CL14 // MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X // Cooler Master V650 // Fractal Meshify C

Audio setup: Audient iD4 // Adam A7X // Sennheiser HD 650 // Sennheiser HD 25-II // Audio Technica M50x // Sennheiser Momentum 4

The 240Hz is not worth it, you are reaching a point of diminishing returns, the difference from 140Hz to 240Hz is barely noticeable, in my opinion, a 1440p 144Hz ips screen is a much better choice. I agree that G-sync is a waste, also, if you have an overclocked 1070ti/1080 with a high refresh screen, you won't benefit that much from technologies such as G-sync because tearing won't appear that often and when it does, it's not so noticeable.

Unasked input: I see you buying a beast pc for gaming, I would recommend going with an 8700k/8600k rather than a 2700x. Intel performs better in games and overclocks better, also, both the 8700k and 8600k have 6 cores with 12/6 threads which should be enough for any multithreaded app that you may want to use it with.

Actually the new 2700x have about the same performance as the i7-8700k
