Is NVMe ssd work with PCI-e adapter?

Hindol29

Hi every one,

I am new to this site and i am very much helpful if any one can help me.....

I heard about NVMe SSD and it's speed, but my motherboard doesn't have any M.2 SSD slot. So best option is for me to use a PCIe NVMe adapter, i search the internet and found some adapters, but i am wondering whether NVMe ssd works properly with PCI-e adapters and is it going to support on my motherboard!

The adapters are for PCI-e 3.0x16 & 3.0x4 slot, but my MB has PCI-e 2.0x16 slot, will this adapter work on my MB? and if it's work, can i be able to boot windows from it?

Last but not list, my gaming setup is old and i know comparing today's high end gaming rig, my pc is outdated,

Processor - AMD 9590 fx

Motherboard - MSI 990fxa

RAM - DDR3, 32GB Corsair vengeance

Storage - 4 120GB SATAIII SSD in RAID 0

Will it work?  Yes.  Can you use it as a boot drive?  THAT is a matter for your motherboard firmware (BIOS).  If the firmware doesn't have native support, it can't be used as a boot drive, but it could be used as a non-boot drive.

Why would you do that though?

It is my understanding that you need at least a haswell refresh Intel Core i series CPU or newer and a supporting bios to do what you're asking.

Look at the first question under the compatibility section.

It might work, but really depends on what BIOS you have.

Your motherboard chipset will not support booting from it however

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Thanks everyone for your generous reply......

so in a nutshell I can use the adapter in my MB PCI-e 16x slot.

As a storage drive, ok, but as a bootable drive, bepends on BIOS version......

Not necessarily the BIOS version, but the chipset. If you have an Intel 90 series chipset, a BIOS update should allow booting. I don't think chipsets before then supported it regardless of BIOS version. I'm not sure about AMD's side, other than any socket AM4 motherboard supports it out of the box.

Also note that an x16 card is overkill for an adapter. See if you can find one with an x4 connector since that's the maximum lanes NVMe drives will use (not that it really matters, just me being OCD)

It can depend on a few things though.  For example for Intel's x79 chipset (Sandy Bridge-E/Ivy Bridge-E) there are countless successes in hacking in the necessary modules into the firmware to allow native NVME booting.  I've not DONE this on my x79 board, despite having the BIOS image stored in a folder for if I ever need it, since I'm pretty sure that the actual improvements in upgrading from a SATA 1TB 850 EVO to a NVME 1TB 970 Evo will leave me saying 'BUT I SPENT $600 ON THIS! >____<"

Fair.  And unlike a lot of mobos, my x79 board has USB Bios Flashback so even if I totally brick it, restoring it is a piece of cake.  And even if that fails, I've pulled EEPROM chips and reprogrammed them when need be.  I've read about such hacks done on like z77 boards but in those cases a lot of those boards would leave most users SOL if they bricked them due to lacking the tools or anything akin to Asus' USB Bios Flashback.
