Most of the reasonably priced drives (like this one) seem to have horror stories in the reviews; what 3TB drives are actually safe and don't cost an arm and a leg?

EDIT: It needs to be 7200RPM for my uses.

Well what do you need to store on it? 4TB external hard drives can be had for around $100.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Horror stories in the sense that the drive came in a paper bag, was dated 2013, and died within 4 days. Surely there are drives that don't have large numbers of these problems?

Might be worth just getting a 2TB hybrid drive then, will improve loading times.

Maybe OP has slow internet connection, who wants to wait hours and hours for a game to download and install. Also some people have ridiculously limited internet connections that won't allow them to download multiple games a month.

But 3 TBs?

Even 1TB holds a ton of modern games.

I'd rather have 2TBs of Hybrid Storage rather than 3TBs of traditional storage.

This might be a question for a new topic but how big of an SSD should you use? Does the cache get cleared when you reboot?

id go 250 as there pretty cheap and have a good value. Storage spaces is tiered storage and isn't deleted on reboot.

If that was the goal you'd probably want X470 so you can get the software for free. Otherwise not sure what software you would use to do it.

And it would be $60 + 240GB SSD or around $80 most likely.

windows 8+ has storage spaces built in that allows tiered storage.

how? Its built into the system, work well. It does have the problems of any caching or tiering solution, but works well and is stable.

Just never heard of it, seems like no one uses it.

Well its a big thing for the enterprise, but most consumers don't have a lot of drives they want to cache and just like having one ssd and one hdd. Its also pretty hidden.

It is used more for the server environments not really for desktop use. I actually didn't know until just now that it was supported on normal Windows +8. I always thought it was only for Windows server.

I will have to take a look, I have a SSD laying around and my current setup is sort of a manual caching solution. I have an SSD and a hard drive I will just manually copy the game I am currently playing over to the SSD. And when run out of space on the SSD I move the games I play less often back to the hard drive.

Cool, I have an 256GB laying around here somewhere and maybe an old 1TB drive. I will have to give I a shot and compare performance.
