I have an old laptop that died on me fairly recently. This one - https://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs/laptops-and-netbooks/hp-pavilion-15-1188740/review

Given my limited knowledge of computers, my previous laptop experiences, and some cursory Google searches, I think that the motherboard is dead on it. I want to sell it for parts to someone who can make use of it, but I have no idea how to value it. Does anyone out there have a reasonable estimate for how I should price it?

Thanks

Depending on how dead it is and how competetn your buyer is it could be unfixable down to this being material value only or fixable with a soldering iron in under 10 minutes.
Maybe you can further describe your issue?

Sure. The problem started when I noticed it wouldn't charge one day after switching it on. It still had about 75% battery but it didn't recognise the fact that it was plugged in. Shortly after that it switched itself off (mid-use and with still a lot of battery life). Since then it has not switched back on. When the power button is pressed nothing at all happens. No noises or lights or screen flicker. I also noticed that shortly before this happened it was starting to take quite a long time to boot into Windows.

I know for a fact the hard drive is fine - I've removed that and tested it in another PC. But that's about all I can say for sure.

One of my main reasons for suggesting that it's the motherboard is because exactly the same thing happened to my previous laptop years ago. I took that one to a repair shop and they told me it was the motherboard and that it wouldn't be cost-effective to fix it (they weren't getting any money out of me for a repair or a replacement so I believed them).

If the motherboard is dead, your value is in the Ram, HDD, the display and the plastics (depending in what condition they are). That AMD APU is probably unsalable, since who will need old laptop cpu? Parting it out will definitely help for more cash out of it but make take ages to get rid of all of it.

Determining the value of each part is easy - go on a site like ebay and search say *GB DDR3 ram is X much, that ***GBs HDD is that much and so on.

Honestly, not more than $50 for something like that.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03876861

It only has 4GB of DDR3, probably SODIMM so that's even worse - $20-$30. And this is close to "brand new" price, since RAM should be completely fine.

The APU is most likely soldiered to the motherboard and that thing is probably dead so $0. And if it's not integrated, then it still holds no value in 2018.

The drive is a 2.5" one that's also been used and the speed is only 5400RPM so... well $0 at this point. I wouldn't even buy a HDD that's few months old for half the price honestly.

I guess you can flip the display somewhere, but considering it's a LED one with a lot resolution you won't get more than $50 (I don't know what that display is actually worth. But probably $10 since it's a laptop one).

Sorry bud, but you can't expect to sell it for a decent amount since it wasn't even good in the first place.

I don't expect to sell it for a decent amount at all, just unsure as to exactly how low I should be pricing it.

I think maybe eBay is the best bet here. I'll start it off low and let the bidders tell me how exactly how little it's worth.
