Home NAS with external access

I want to build a NAS that I can get to remotely, (on mobile), have redundancy and to be able to add drives as needed without having to delete the array and redo it.  I want to start with 8tb or 9tb and upgrade as needed.(the size or number of drives aren't a issue.) Thank you in advance.

Id probably just get a synology or qnap. Easy to use, low power, quiet, good mobile apps and support for things like nextcloud.

I don't like the prices of those.  I want to build. It will be only a NAS for now, maybe a media server  in the future not sure yet.
