internet is suddenly absolute trash

so i live in the middle of nowhere, where i don't really have any good internet options. and while my bandwidth is pretty pitiful at about 14 Mb down 0.6 Mb up with average pings in tests and games at around 30-40 ms, suddenly about a week ago it became pretty much unusable. my internet drops every couple hours for like 30 mins at a time but more importantly my ping usually hangs at around 200 ms. i have no idea whats changed, what can i check/do to try and mediate this issue. also just got a better router, and it only has ethernet input, but my internet comes in as a dsl cable. can a simple dsl to ethernet adapter deal with this? 

 

apologies if this comes off as expecting people to fi my problems but i have no clue on this anymore.:/

If it's DSL then it's probably a line problem. Call up your ISP and see if they can check the line, have them come out and run some tests from your side too. As for the router part, you'll need to get a compatible DSL router. Usually ISPs will list compatible devices for their network somewhere on the website or a quick google search "Compatible router for (ISP)"

already did, they were completely useless and said that nothing was wrong with our connection. i'm changing ISP in a month anyway

if its a line issue i'm fucked, last time a line issue came up it took them 6 months to come and my internet was completely down for 2 months, and i already have a isp issued router linking into the new one to do this but assumed it would bottleneck it.

Your going to be limited by the slowest speed which in your case is the link from the ISP to your home. You'll need a DSL router since you can't just plug a phone cable into an ethernet port and be done. DSL and Ethernet are two completely different standards and while you can use a phone line in an ethernet port, if you plug a DSL line into an Ethernet port it will not understand it and see nothing but garbage.

If you want to or have to keep their box you can turn off wireless on their box and disable NAT and DHCP on your router and then connect the two.

Should have asked this earlier but who is your ISP anyway?

Could at least poke around and see about compatible boxes and whatnot :)

Well at least I managed to find out if they let you bring your own router :)

DSL, I used to have DSL.  I was at the end of the line and expected really slow speeds.

Note: Your phone/DSL provider may be different the your ISP provider.  The line provider may be the issue and not your ISP Provider.

Issues I experienced:

1) Someone had their phone service fixed and I was switch to a barely functional line with the wrong impedance and with insufficient bandwidth.

2) When it rained or trees where trimmed, the internet became really slow.

3) My phone line with DSL could be used for analog voice as well as DSL.  I had to disconnect the Analog phone and rely on my Cell due to again, lack of bandwidth.

4) If you have Analog phones, faxes and or modes, make sure they are behind a Choke filter.  Otherwise, your DSL can adversely affected.
5) This information may be dated and your success of implementation may vary.
