Everything looks good minus the i5/h100i. You really don't need that big of a liquid cooler for a locked i5 cpu. You could later upgrade to an i7 or just spend a little less and save some money on that

You're getting a $300 mobo and $100 CPU cooler with a $200 locked CPU. I honestly don't understand why. You'd be better off getting a $300 i7 8700, $100 mobo, and $30 cooler, which will cost significantly less and perform better.

The 960 pro is also a waste. NVMe SSDs don't actually improve boot times and app launch times by a meaningful amount, so you're better off getting something like a 1tb 860 evo. Also throw out the Optane SSD; if you really want to accelerate your HDD just use RST and use part of your 1tb SSD as cache.

4x8gb also should be changed to 2x16gb, since you don't have quad channel.

Since you're going pretty overkill I would suggest you get something other than a blower cooler 1080 ti.

Here's my list of critiques:

  • If you don't plan on getting a lot of storage, I'd take a look at the 460x. It's basically the same case, a little smaller, and cheaper.
  • I'd look hard at dropping the cooler to something cheaper and going with at least an 8700.
  • Why do you have 2 1TB drives instead of 1 2TB?
  • Make sure you're getting one of the H370/Z370/B360 boards.
  • Reconsider the Optane drive. They're not supposed to be that great.
  • You can drop down to a 650w (or really, even a 550w) PSU to save some money.

What is your budget/country? Do you do anything besides gaming?

You're likely better off with a 1440p 144hz IPS free-sync display from Pixio or Nixeus at $399

Otherwise the R5 2600/X is a better value CPU.

Why do you need 32GBs of RAM with an i5?

Buy a case that actually has airflow

Optane is a joke wouldn't bother with it, If you're after that kind of thing go for X470 with it's new StoreMi features

It's definitely not a better value for gaming, at least compared to something like an i5 8400 in the majority of games.

Better value overall, decent upgrade path, more multi-threaded performance, soldered IHS is a nice bonus.

I doubt the difference in gaming between an i5 8400 and R5 2600 is worth losing the rest of what ryzen gives you. Especially when you're talking about 1440p gaming.

id agree with the others get a cheaper z mobo, so you can get an 8700k instead of the 8500.

I'd recommend around $150 you get good features/$. gigabyte and asrock generally are good in that space.

I'd also recommend droping the optane drive and putting that money into a bigger or a second ssd. and don't get a 2tb drive, most 3tb drives are around the same price or lower.

2x16 or 2x8 is a good bet instead of 4x8.
I think the h100i v2 is pleanty of cooling for the 8700k, but yeah don't get a blower style card, dual or triple fan cards are quieter and will boost higher longer.

pretty good base to start with, being your first time.

ryzen is a value, but intel has ipc.
that StoreMi though... I've been thinking about that ever since lvl1 put up that video this weekend. Dank for gaming storage.

Better value overall doesn't really matter if OP is only gaming. What good do more cores do if they won't be used? Value is dependent on the scenario at hand, Ryzen may be a better "value" on average but that doesn't matter if OP doesn't do the stuff that Ryzen benefits you in.

There are still some games noticeably better performance on Covfefe Lake than Ryzen, even at 1440p. And in the future, with a more powerful GPU, we could potentially see more games have that difference at 1440p.

Who cares if it has more multi threaded performance if that doesn't benefit OP? You're talking about all this value and better multi-threaded performance, but who cares if it doesn't actually benefit the consumer?

That's great that it has better multi threaded performance. Awesome, if you do something that needs multi threaded performance, then that's great! Get Ryzen! But OP doesn't need multi threaded performance. Why should they buy something for a feature that they don't even need?

I'm asking you why they should get Ryzen. You respond with it has better multi threaded performance. But that doesn't directly address my question; why does that mean OP should buy Ryzen?

That would be my recommendation yes, because the entire package is a better value than a bit more fps.

It's better to have the option of doing more with your CPU rather than having a bit more fps, especially when I doubt most people would be able to tell the difference between 100fps and 110fps.

Either way with his budget he can easily get an i7 8700/K or an R7 2700/X

why are you splurging on a $200 ssd, 570x and overly expensive board just to get an 8500? use the money for an 8700k instead.

So then why do people buy GTX 1080s over 1070 tis? Or 8700ks over 8600ks for gaming? If that 10% doesn't matter?

10% FPS can be noticed. It may not be super apparent, but there is a difference.

They were able to notice a difference between the 1200 and G4560 even though the difference in FPS wasn't exactly that much.

If 10% didn't matter, then why buy a 2600x over a 2600? Why buy an 8600k over an 8600? Why buy a 2400G over a 2200G? All these situations suddenly don't seem to make sense because "10% doesn't matter." But it does.

That's an Athlon X4 950, which has almost half the performance of an intel core at the same speed.

Ryzen is about 90% of coffee lake at this point. The other one's aren't exactly just 10% either. As they said at the end of the video, they're pretty close, and that was only first gen Ryzen.

But you buy it for the better platform over a bit more fps as I stated earlier.

Most people don't really do a ton more with their CPU TBH.

From a gaming perspective, i5-8600k/i7-8700k cant be beat right now.  And that 10% at 100fps is the difference between above and below 60fps later.

I would love to flat out just say Ryzen is a better proposition, but it isn't.  So far the score comes down to the following...

Intel = faster in games by far (mainly for the K series chips), especially if you consider that a 5ghz OC is pretty easy to do. Needs a bit more tweaking to do live game streaming.

AMD = doesnt need as much tweaking to do game streaming with a good viewer experience, overclocks like crap.

Games don't typically increase their CPU requirements by much, it's why an i7 2600K is still a pretty viable gaming CPU. Ryzen/Coffee Lake are going to be fine for gaming for a good while.

As for overclocking, I would recommend the i7 8700 over the 8600K any day, but that's spending a good amount of money on a cooler and possibly delidding, for just a bit more fps yet again.
