Two thick white lines

Rowan88

Hi.

I took my GPU out to clean and reapply thermal paste.

Since putting it back in I get these two big thick vertical lines down the screen, one in middle and one at far right.

I have taken it apart and redone, same issue.

I have tried in a different pci slot, same issue.

It even shows it on the bios.

Does this mean my GPU is unfixable and worthy of binning?

Is there anything that would have caused this?

Thanks

Did you try a different port on the GPU, a different monitor, or a different cable?

Suppose something might have happened to it then.

The GTX 1050ti is the like most reasonable modern GPU choice while pricing is still broken.

I was actually looking at the 1060 dual in white or strix. Or 1070 if a decent price.

I'd live with a 1050ti and save like $100

Though there are some 580s for around $300 now, and that'll save you money on a future free-sync monitor upgrade

Would a 1050ti let me play games out now and for a good year or so on high settings with 60fps?

Thats why I was looking to invest a bit more into a 1060, seemed like the main card for 60hz 1080p gaming on AAA titles for a while.

You just have to tweak settings on the 1050ti, Basically just turn off AA and Shadows and you should be above 60fps in most games.

1050ti is more medium-high 1060/580 is more high-ultra.

If you're going to spend more I'd get a 580 though.

Why is the 580 better?

RX 580 is about £280 and is only a 4GB card

GTX 1060 Strix is about £320 and is 6GB

Sorry I just noticed you can get different varients of the 580 lol.

Why is the 580 better?

The 580 just has better Vulkan/DX12 performance which should be used in more games, but it mostly depends on if you're upgrading your monitor at some point and to what.

Also you have like a Special edition 580 available which will run at like 1450mhz out of the box. Though I'm not sure it's worth it over a cheaper 580.

The G-sync monitor costs over double what the same kind of panel in a free-sync display costs, dunno why it's such a large gap on the part picker.

Cheapest 580 on the part picker is 262

Here's a review for a similarly clocked 580 to the limited edition one. Theirs also OC's past 1500mhz.

Thanks for the replies.

I am watching some comparisons on the RX580 8GB Aorus and GTX 1060 6GB Strix.

Why is the GTX not faster when it has a higher boost clock?

I have a S340 Elite White so I am trying to keep a nice RGB build going to match. £30 cheaper for the RX and benchmarks seem pretty similar except RX has 2GB more ram.

Because you can't infer to better performance from increased clock speeds across different architectures.

Thanks,

Guess I will do some research then and see which is better, so far it doesn't seem like there is much between them at all, apart from GSync and FreeSync of course.

In Depth Video if you want a real answer.

Also if you can find a used R9 290/GTX 970 tier GPU or better for less money go for that.

You have to be real careful and evenly tighten the cooler down. You may have broken a solder joint or two on the processor while reinstalling the cooler.

Would it be obvious to see this? Would me sending a pick of the underside of the board help any?

You could always whip out the disposable oven! Would not recommend putting it in your real oven.

I was terrified replacing the cooler on my 1080 with the Accelero, but it came out ok.

I made a topic about oven method, but I don't have a disposable one and don't want to risk my home one :(

I took it apart there and replaced it and now I don't get any video output at all lol.

In my view, the 580 is better, but that's only if you can find one for a reasonable price.

The prices im seeing so far are:

RX580 Aorus - £299

GTX 1060 6GB Dual White - £320

GTX 1060 6GB Strix - £325

So there's not much between them, and im trying to suit my nice white/rgb colour theme...

Will do a bit more researching but I prefer the look of the STRIX, but again if the RX is cheaper and gives more power then should be swaying to that.

I liked that the Aorus was RGB until I seen the orange lines don't change colour :'(
