i5 6500 w/ gtx 1070

Hello, I've been looking to upgrade my current gpu (gtx 950 2gb sc) to a gtx 1070. My current system is an i5 6500, gtx 950 2gb sc, 2x4 ddr4 ram 2133 mhz, and an asrock h110-m mobo. I was on other forums but never saw a clear answer for whether or not my current system would bottleneck with a gtx 1070? Thanks for your help!!

get a new cpu wait for the new ryzen chips or if you want to stay intel get a new cpu because that will be bottleneck for the 1070

While the i5 6500 will bottleneck the full potential of the GTX 1070 I would say that you'll still get a very noticeable boost in performance from the GTX 950.

For sure, besides if you have enough money to get a 1070 just get a used i7 7700 or 8700 from ebay?

Depends on the game.... Most games will run fine and others with have horrible frame drops. I had a 1070 in my current build and games like bf1 and gta v would have massive dips at random times while R6 ran pretty smooth.

Are you saying it dipped when you had a bottlenecking cpu?

Yup but it's game dependent.... Most of my games played fine once I OCed the RAM, which gave better minimums so my dips weren't as bad then

Get the 1070 first. Will see some bottleneck, but it's miles ahead of the 960

get the new ryzen chips like the ryzen 5 2600 when it comes out next week and you could just settle for a b350 mobo and mostly all of them can overclock so you can have fun with that and ryzen is cheaper than what intel has to offer with similar performance or in some cases even more performance plus you will have more money for extra crap which is always great

Like mentioned above, your bottleneck will be game dependent. For example, BF1 apparently runs quite a bit better on CPUs with more core and threads (awesome on Ryzen apparently).  But some other games will hardly show any bottleneck.

I'm running a 4670k (at stock) and I jumped from a 780 to a 1080 and the jump was huge. I still feel like I have lots of life left in my cpu.

If you're still concerned about cpu bottlenecking, try finding benchmarks for the games you play to see if your 6500 will hold you back.

So what exactly on a cpu bottlenecks a gpu? Cores, speed...

To  know if it'll be a bottle neck need the resolution you want to run at and the refresh rate.

1080p you may hit a bottle neck but it will be eventually but only at really high frames rates game dependant of course but if you watch the vidoes you are hitting frame rates 100+ and even higher 200+ for e sports titles

1440p less likely especially for triple a titles

4k the great equaliser you probably wouldn't notice a difference between 6500 and 6700.

so yeah go ahead and upgrade i'm running a 1070 on 4790k at 1440p without any problems

You can't get an 8400 with your current motherboard.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!
