Here’s why notches are dumb

The latest phone from Doogee called the Mix 4 uses a sliding screen to reveal the ear speaker and front facing camera. This is not unlike slider phones from the 2000s. This allows for a bezeless design without the need for a notch for the front facing camera. Apple take notes. Here’s a link to the article:

this is like when Oppo made that weird rotating camera for front and back photos. Maybe notches are dumb, but this is faaaaaar from the solution. Actually, hey, this is even DUMBER than a notch.

It accomplished nothing! Because you still have a big fat bezel LOL. That said, 13 megapixel selfies FTW!!!

you mean the chinese prototype with no top thing?

another issue there is that I still need, somehow, to see the notifications. Hiding the top camera hides the notifications. So back to square one.

iPhones don't have the notification light. You could easily use the "always on" screen feature you see on the Samsung S8 instead.

A world filled with Chinese phones!

Here are some other interesting brand names: Vernee, Elephone, Cubot, Meze, Leagoo, Bluboo, Nomu, Oukitel, Umidigi...

well there are non-chinese phones...

Wiko (french) is rather popular around here, otherwise archos (french) has/had some popularity long ago. BQ too, from spain.

though all these small brands will most likely end up disappearing over time, as they don't manage to grab enough market share and stay in the budget segment.

to that list, there's also nubia and homtom and a few others. really, really, strange names.

i guess? though i think we'll see sooner or later a camera/notification light under the screen. We've managed to put the fingerpring sensor below it, so why not the rest? will see, but I don't think the notch is going away.

At least we get software solutions like huawei allowing you to put a black bar on their new devices

It's just a prototype. That's something that should certainly be considered, as it may never actually be produced.

I see a huge problem with this style. It loosens over time, unless it's very well made, and very few are. My friends Priv wobbles. The slider phone I had years ago began to wobble so bad that it became sketchy to use; I had a friend with the same phone, the top piece of his came right off.

The other issue, and the one I take the biggest stance on, is speakers under glass. I don't want everyone around me to be able to hear my call, thanks. I'd gladly take a notch over that.

The point of this wasn't to hide anything. It was to have a much better selfie cam. Props to them for trying something different.

I think this was before you were able to have two decent cameras on a phone.

How does hiding a camera hide notifications?

Use Always On and get almost half the battery life? No thanks :P

With OLED screens you don't even need to place it under the glass. Just light up a small section of the screen to make it look like an LED.

The names might be strange to you, but probably make sense in their native language. Not everything has to conform to English.
