Power loss deleted my desktop files... what?

suchamoneypit

I lost power about 7 times in a row, my server actually had power loss around 3 times (backup battery couldn't last forever), and upon booting my server, all of my desktop files are gone, but my C drive is fine. How in the hell does a power loss delete my desktop files? They are just gone. Not deleted and in recycling bin, its as if they never existed.

I have two online servers and the other one is fine. This has got to be the strangest issue i've ever had.

backups?

you can try checkdisk, but if you care about the files, don't do this. It can delete the files on the drive.

If the filesystem is in use, the file can be lost if power is cut.

One file was in use, but it deleted multiple folders many of which are not in use. Some older backups on a USB I keep though. Funny I just made a thread earlier about setting up my servers with triple storage redundancy. The server was just for crypto mining so its back up and running but I am truly confused on how a power loss manged to delete on the files in one place, and the other server unaffected was running identical to the one that lost files, just different CPUs.

Make a image of the drive, then run chkdsk, that will often find those files.
