I think that setting your frame cap to (refresh rate) is a better idea.

It adds a slight bit of latency (a few milliseconds), but it's not really noticeable, especially not compared to how awful tearing is.

If you can stay over your monitors refresh rate enable fast sync or enhanced sync depending on your GPU.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

That adds way more latency.  If he's getting tearing, he obviously doesn't have trouble hitting 60fps.

It's less latency than what V-sync adds though isn't it? Your fps always has to stay above the refresh rate for it to work though.

I don't think I've ever really noticed screen tearing, had 2 free-sync monitors where I've never really used the feature.

They're fancy trademarked terms for triple buffering, where as V-Sync is double buffering. Triple buffering is great if you aren't always hitting 60, but if you are staying at over 60 then V-Sync is better. Neither add too much latency, and I don't think anyone but eSports players notice it, but an extra buffered frame probably won't be helpful for him.

V-Sync is known to cause some problems. I’m saying, actually set your legit frame cap to your refresh rate. Frame cap = 60 got a 60Hz monitor. That’s what I did.
